Once my cat started being symptomatic he largely stopped grooming, no purring, nothing. He's currently on vetsulin, working with my vet on dosage to try and get him regulated, but switching him to basaglar and just waiting on the shipment. It will take time. But did any of your cats stop grooming and purring, but then start again once you got them regulated? How long after getting them under control did you notice improvements in behaviors? Thank you.

Yes, oh yes! In fact, when I took Wink in from the shelter to foster, he started to pull and tug at his matted clumps of fur on his hindquarters, 2 days after I took him in. I couldn't get those big tangled clumps out fast enough for him. Did very short sessions with a metal toothed comb, for long haired cats, teasing out those clumps and cutting out others.

Slicker brush to help with other spots.

Purring took a bit longer. He was in absolutely horrible shape when I got him from the cat shelter.
Growing his magnificent long hair back took months. He had gigantic nickel and dime sized patches of dandruff, and his hair was very thin and patchy. Shelter did a bad job taking care of diabetic cats like him.

Diabetic neuropathy took time to heal too, but that was completely resolved.

Hope. Always remember that there is hope for you Kyle and your kitty Vlad.

While you are still on the Vetsulin, and waiting for the Basaglar to arrive, you might want to up the dose of Vetsulin to 4.25U. The 4U right now isn't cutting it for Vlad. And hold the dose steady for 6 cycles minimum, unless Vlad drops <90 mg/dL. Changing the dose every day, cycle to cycle isn't helping Vlad to get lower BG numbers and feel better.

Consistency. Insulins like consistency.

I don't see any indication on Vlad's SS that says you should have been adjusting the dose from that 4U you were giving back on 4/13. Why the changes from 4U to 3.4U to 3.6U?

Whatever you are doing with the insulin dosing makes no sense to me. Would you explain a bit please? I'm perplexed.

Kobiashi wasn't diabetic but had been left in an empty house when the owners moved and he became an inconvenience. He was neurotic in the extreme, licked his legs and part of his tummy bare. He was already crated when I picked him up sight unseen. When I opened the crate door I found out why he had been hidden from inspection. Out popped a 28 pound lemon-headed beast who took a quick look around the apartment and the other cats, then settled in on the sofa and very quickly began normal grooming and purring like an old man snoring. That's what happens when a cat starts to feel loved (and better) again. Miss you Kobi!

To be completely honest I was out of my mind when I reduced his dosage. I have had issues with insomnia my entire life, and I'm very sensitive to disruptions in my sleep schedule. For a couple nights in a row Vlad woke me up meowing loudly in the night, and threw me off, and I haven't slept more than 1 or 2 hours a night since, for about a week now. I can't rationalize why I did that, or why I found my phone in the freezer. Last night I was freaking out because I couldn't find his glucometer. found it in the laundry hamper 20 minutes later. No clue why I put it there. Just going a little crazy I guess.

Unrelated question, maybe I should make a separate post about it. I've been giving Vlad some of the lower phos Fancy feast, because he had been diagnosed with CKD 3 two years ago. He has been on only all meat Fancy Feast since then, and each vet visit doc has seen big improvements in his kidney function. Took him last week to get the Basaglar script, and she checked his renal panel. No signs of any kidney disease whatsoever, all his numbers were normal.

My question is, should I be as wary of phos in his fancy feast now that it appears that his kidneys are just fine? I'm trying to put weight on him (he's up to 6.4 lb from 5.5 lb about a week ago), and he seems to have a bigger appetite for the pate's that happen to have higher phos.

I WISH I could get Zoe it eat the low Phos foods. :( I think once CKD is apparent they can be susceptible to it again. I dont know that for fact, seems reasonable though. Maybe stick to the lower phos ones. Thats what I'm *trying* to do with Zoe.

You were exhausted. You were overwhelmed. You were not thinking clearly. You were sleep deprived.
Happens to all of us.

I've never heard of Chronic kidney disease (CKD) simply disappearing. So your cat's blood phosphorus levels are <6 mg/dL now? No other signs of CKD?

I think I would try to keep the phosphorus levels lower. Less than 250 mg phosphorus/100 kcals is ok. Under 200 is preferred. Lower is better.

And of course, there is Tanya's CKD website. http://www.felinecrf.org/index.htm
He will reluctantly eat the turkey and giblets classic pate, but if I give him the savory salmon feast or the ocean whitefish and tuna feast he will inhale it. Little dude is a fish addict I guess.
Try mixing the 2 foods together. Some of the FF T&G with the fish flavored ones. Try half and half mixture and see what happens.

p.s. I found my cell phone in the freezer once. During the day. Think it dropped out of my hand, while I was getting a couple of larger items out and I forgot about it.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) simply disappearing.
It never disappears, there's a reason it happened and all we can do is control it and do our best to make sure it doesn't come back.
Don't worry about any sleeping habits. I was told my periodic drooling was a sympathetic response to one of my neurological oddities. If I sleep in just the right position my wife wakes me up because I'm blowing bubbles and when they pop it wakes her up. Not tonight dear, I'm drooling!
And no, Canadians do not dream and drool about donuts. Pass the Beaver Tails will you?
