Did I do the right thing?

Tonight at amps+11, Max's bg was 116, so I did not shoot. I let him eat and then retested an hour later and got 338. I went ahead and shot .25u PZI. Now I am afraid that I should not have given the shot with such a low number at amps . Did I do anything wrong?

You were right not to shoot the 116. It's impossible to know whether he went up to the 338 mostly on his own or whether the food caused the number to rise. Probably a combination of the two. Your .25 is a nice low dose.

I would try to get a number in an hour or so to make sure he isn't headed down too fast, just in case.

Next time, wait to feed him and test again in 20-30 minutes so you can get a number not influenced by food.

I need to make an edit to my original post. The numbers above should have been amps+11=181 and pmps=344. I was in the middle of a party when I tested and was going off of memory of celebrating my birthday party when I posted tonight, so I don't know where in the world I got 116 from. At any rate, just retested pmps+7 and the number was 246.

I will wait next time to feed if I get a low number amps and pmps, then retest without the influence of food. It is just so hard b/c I usually feed him while testing and he acts like he is starving! All of the cats act that way since switching them to wet food and only feeding 2x per day. Of course, Max gets freeze dried salmon treats every time I test, so the other cats are really getting the shaft!

One thing I have noticed over the past few weeks....Max's water consumption has decreased to what I believe is "normal." I don't have to refill the water bowl every day and he doesn't hang out at the water bowl anymore. In fact, I can't remember the last time that I saw him drinking, whereas before, he was there constantly.

Have you considered feeding more often? Especially of his numbers are coming down, smaller more frequent meals can support the pancreas. Lots of people freeze the wet food and leave it out. Some use automatic feeders.

Good sign he is drinking less. I was concerned with the big jump from 116 to the 300s. Glad it wasn't so drastic.

I can try to feed smaller more frequent meals. Does 6 cans a day for 4 cats sound about right? That is what I am feeding them right now. Friskies pâtés...Max's amps was in the 230 range today. Can't believe he is that low with shooting .25u. That is just CRAZY!
