Pixie has diarrhea....couple days now.
Did some food flavor changes as I noticed him starting to become picky....could be the cause.
Also noticed little specks of bright red blood.
I imagine his GI system needs a rest.
What is the protocol I should follow....

Re: Diarrhea protocol

Could be food allergies/irritation.
Make clean fresh water available
Go back to prior foods; add 1-2 tablespoons of water to them to maintain hydration.
Monitor glucose impact.

In the future, make changes more slowly - about 20-25% change per day.

Pick up some Forti Flora (our shopping partner Amazon has it - link at top of page) or try 1-2 teaspoons of plain yogurt with active cultures (if not milk sensitive).

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

Well, this evening Pix had another diarrhea episode and this had a more alarming amount
of blood in it.
I noticed a few hairballs over the past few days with vomit.
This may not be related to food change afterall.

He finished Clavamox about a week ago.
This was 2nd round of AB...first was Convenia.
White count was still high after convenia.

His BG is fine right now.
He's not acting hungry at all.

Have not given any food since this am.
It all good throughout the night will giving a little baby food be ok?
And then see how he does?

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

Are you seeing any indicators of pain - huddling in meatloaf/tucked up Sphinx position, hiding? If you gently press on the abdomen to you get a cry or a swat or struggling to get away?

I'd be calling the vet 1st thing in the am if its getting worse. GI bleeding could be many different things, not just the food. Is there a history of eating plastic or other inedible things?

Pix never liked to be touched so it is likely he'd run from me on a good day.
He is not huddling or hiding.
With his last infection he hid from us and I knew he was sick.
He seems ok other than he is not "asking" to eat.

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

No more than 2 days of not eating; at 2 days of not eating, he goes to a vet because he would be at risk for diabetic ketoacidosis.

You could try 1/4 of a 10 mg Pepcid AC regular to see if it helped him feel better - some times an overly acid stomach will reduce appetite.

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

I just walked out of here and he was waiting for me....to feed him.
I just picked him up, squeezed his tummy a bit and he was fine with it.

Last time he ate anything was this am...then the bouts of diarrhea.
If no diarrhea in the am is it ok to start little bits of baby food or better to go with plain chicken.
I also have some vanilla yogurt, but think last time he rejected it when he was sick.

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

If he is hungry, give him a bit of plain chicken or all meat baby food and see how he does. The diarrhea may or may not be food related.

Unflavored yogurt, not vanilla, with active cultures, 1-2 teaspoons is OK if he is not sensitive to dairy.

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

Noticed some vomit during the night and a small amt of diarrhea. Mostly just liquid.
He ate about 1 tsp of baby food at 2 separate times.
Tried to eat the dogs food and peeked in the kitten's room to see if I accidentally left the food down....which i didn't.
No diarrhea this am.
Fingers crossed at this point because if this doesn't clear up, i fear the worst.....
It's been a rough couple months with him.

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

I hope he's doing better. IMO Clavamox almost always causes diarrhea. We foster kittens/cats that normally have Upper Respiratory Infections. With their antibiotics comes diarrhea. The blood can be from the inflamed digestive system. I would offer his normal food, maybe just a smaller portion.

Re: Diarrhea protocol-Blood in diarrhea worse

Afternoon...would not eat any baby food.
Offered plain chicken and he walked away.
I offered some tuna water and he drank it right up.
He really does love the seafood flavors
Noticed a small amount of diarrhea in the littler box, but no blood like yesterday.

Is it ok to give him small amounts of tuna now even though he still is having a bit of diarrhea?
I am hoping that the fact that there was no visible blood this time is a good thing.

I will try some yogurt tonight and see if he will go for that.

I just don't want to jeopardize any progress we made so far.

Re: Diarrhea protocol day2...need advice

The small amount of tuna water I gave to pix gave him diarrhea.
He wont eat baby food or yogurt or chicken.
I imagine we will be going to the vet tomorrow.
Is there anything else I should be doing until then?
do you think this could be from clavamox....he finished over a week ago.

Clavamox is very tough for some cats to tolerate. It may be the clavamox, but I'm not entirely confident with symptoms developing a week later; you probably would have seen the diarrhea and vomiting start while he was on the meds.

I highly suggest the vet at this point. With vomiting and (bloody) diarrhea there is a risk of dehydration, lack of food for a prolonged period can affect the liver and, as mentioned, you have to be careful of diabetic complications. If it's a GI infection and an antibiotic is needed, he'll probably go on metronidazole.

IMHO, I would watch him carefully overnight and get him to the vet first thing in AM. Any liquids he will tolerate will help. Don't wait much longer.

Bite the bullet and go to the vet.
He doesn't feel good, ie, he is suffering.
It may or may not be treatable, and if not, procrastinating won't change that.

We did get Pixie to the vet this am.

His white count was high again and what was once suspected is what we did not want to hear.
It was cancer.
We went through the options and even considered measures to buy him some time, but it would be at a
loss of quality of life for Pix as he was never able to tolerate meds well. I would have made that decision for myself to feel
better...not Pixie.
We made the heart wrenching decision to let him go peacefully.
I once felt so successful being able to get him OTJ and today I pretty much feel like a failure.

There's not much more I can say right now. I am truly heartbroken.
Thank you all for helping us through the past few months.
