Hey everyone. My Bailey has had pretty bad diarrhea the last couple of days. My mom says she's given her dogs a little bit of pumpkin whenever they've had that trouble before and it clears them right up. I did a quick search on this board but it looks like most people here use it for the opposite problem of constipation. Can I give him a little plain pumpkin for diarrhea though?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I believe pumpkin (pure pumpkin) in the can will help with diarrhea as it has fiber in it. I haven't ever tried it but maybe someone else who has can verify the effectiveness. Also, I believe you can give your cat a probiotic in their food (maybe want to check with the vet on this one and the amount that's appropriate to give).

Pumpkin, 100% pure pumpkin not the pumpkin pie mix, is very effective at controlling diarrhea. I use it all the time with my dog who has chronic diarrhea. Regulation of the bowels does benefit from fiber, pumpkin is fiber. As for a probiotic, I use FortiFlora for Squeaker which can also help with bowel regulation. However for those times when loose stools occur unexpectedly pumpkin is the go to option. You can even freeze what you don't use.

Thanks everyone! That's all a big help. I mixed a teaspoon in with some Fancy Feast (since he wouldn't just eat it off the spoon alone) and he ate most of it that way. I'll keep an eye on the litter box. And I've got FortiFlora on order (should be here Monday!).

Cheers,
x KS
