My 11 yr-old Simba has been diabetic for about 3 yrs. Did well one yr with NO insulin. Within the last 2 yrs my poor baby had all his teeth pulled. This poor baby has been through hell.

His anxiety in the last few yrs has gotten worse. He's constantly attacking my other cat, Shadow. He's constantly following me all over the house. Sits on the couch on my lap every night, sleeps on my neck every night. Wants to go out all the time which I let him out, but never alone. He's always, always supervised outside. I call him yard kitty cause he never goes far and never alone. He's extremely attached to me. My life is this kitty.

MAJOR PROBLEM: He's been spraying my fully furnished wall-to-wall carpet basement which we just got professionally cleaned. Vet started him on Prozac.

He's been on 5mg Prozac for a week now once a day. OMG what a difference. Not following me, not sleeping with me or attacking Shadow yet. To early to say if spraying the basement. His anxiety issues are mostly of wanting to go out. I feel horrible and have cried since he's been on Prozac. He's much calmer...sleeping so much; not having the urge of wanting to go out. I told the vet he seems dazed, but she claims Prozac should not sedate him that much, but I disagree. I'm upset that he's not the same Simba. I just hope my baby is comfortable. I should say his B/S are better since on Prozac.

Does anyone here have experience with diabetic cat on Prozac ?

What dose of Prozac?
My Smokey way on 5 mg once daily for fighting. It reduced the fighting. I did not notice any sedative effect.
Are you getting it from one of the places that sell the $4 generics?

Simba is on 5mg daily, just started Prozac a week ago.....But honestly this cat is high as a kite. Something is not right. I need to call vet tomorrow. Very lethargic, moving extremely slow. Not eating much which I knew this is part of the side-effect, no appetite. I was wondering if I should just give him 2.5mg tonight until I call vet tomorrow. My poor baby. I got the Prozac at my local pharmacy, the generic. I just feel bad and just hoping he's comfortable.

Thank you so much Larry and Kitties. I'll call vet first thing tomorrow morn.

He may not be breaking it down as well as some cats do if cats have any of the same variances in drug metabolism as humans do.

In humans, there are known differences in metabolism of Prozac/fluoxetine that may accelerate or slow down the breakdown.

Our cat, Tisha, was on prozac due to inappropriate urination at one point. It helped with the litter box avoidance, but it completely changed her personality. She went from being very loving and playful to never wanting to interact with us. After a while, we got tired of fighting to get her to take the meds. We also later learned that she had struvite crystals, which was contributing to the litter box avoidance.

Can you just restrict him from the basement? One of the problems with our cat was that she was peeing on my husband's side of the bed at night. We stopped letting her in our room at night and that solved the problem.

Have you tried the nurture calm collar?

Thank you everyone. My Simba would freak out with a collar. I have never heard of nurture calm collar. Vet never mentioned anything about it. So I did call the Vet yesterday and Simba is on 1/4 now of Prozac since last night. I swear this morning he had more energy, not lethargic as he was on 5mg daily. I'm going to try the 1/4 for a few days and hopefully this works.

I'm glad that your cat is feeling better. The collar is a prescription-strength pheremone collar that can help reduce stress and anxiety. While it didn't eliminate inappropriate urination, it did help quite a bit. For whatever reason, Tisha is terrified of my mother (who is our cat sitter). I think my Mom must resemble someone from one of Tisha's past lives. After she got the collar, she decided that she LOVED my mother while we were on vacation. (Of course, the treat bribe didn't hurt.) Tisha doesn't like collars either, and getting it on her is definitely a challenge, but once it's on, it helps. By the way, if you do use the collar, make sure that you tighten it enough that your cat can't able get the collar into his mouth and trim the ends short. Tisha tried to chew it off, which made her vomit for about a day. Part of the reason we switched to the collar is because giving Tisha meds is a total nightmare!
