Diabetic Cat Not Eating

Does anyone have any idea why my diabetic cat is barely eating anything? She used to eat anything that dropped to the floor and even ate out of the dog bowls. She was very overweight about 15 months ago. Slowly she has been eating less. She won’t touch soft anymore and only nibbles a bit here and there. She now weighs under seven pounds and won’t be around much longer if she continues to not eat. Her vet doesn’t know why either and all her bloodwork comes back normal. I am beginning Mirtazapine with her today but I don’t know how long that takes to kick in. We have no idea how old she is, so I thought maybe it is just old age. Usually diabetic cats are always hungry. Has anyone else had this issue?

Has your kitty had a GI panel blood work done? Sounds to me like there might be something else that needs further diagnosis. Has the vet mentioned a possible ultrasound?

Any chance she might be nauseous? lip licking, sniffing food then turning away, hanging out by water bowl? A good anti nausea medication like ondansetron would help in that case.

Not sure what bloodwork was exactly conducted, vet just said everything came back normal. Yes, she does hang out by the water bowl and sniffs food but then turns away. I will ask the vet if she will prescribe ondansetron. Poor kitty, she used to jump on the table during dinner trying to get a lick of food and we had to put our bread in cupboards because she would open the bag and snack on the loaf. That’s how she became diabetic. Thanks so much for your response. Will call the vet tomorrow about the ondansetron.

hi and welcome to the group. How much insulin is she getting, how often and what kind?

does she have any ketones in her blood?

What is her diet, are you feeding low-carb wet/canned/raw only?
