confused_cat Abby's diabetes is currently under control (thank heavens!). We will be adopting 2 kittens at the end of September. I am really worried about maintaining Abby's food regimen while feeding these kittens as they should be. She eats canned Friskies (beef & liver and Turkey & giblets) and Fancy Feast (flaked tuna & shrimp). I'd love any suggestions on how to make this work - PLEASE...

Feed the kittens what she eats--a low carb canned diet is healthy for any stage of life. Or if you feel like the kittens need the extra calories/easily digestible protein go with a low carb canned kitten food like Wellness Kitten or Fancy Feast Kitten (the pate, not the gravies), so that if she does happen to get into it there's no negative carb impact.

High carb and/or dry food is not healthy for any cat, including kittens, but it takes a while for the negative health impacts of the diet to accumulate become apparent.

If you're worried that the kittens will need to be fed more frequently, just feed Abby when you feed the kittens and reduce her portions so that she's still getting the same amount of food. Diabetic cats do great with frequent feedings, as it levels out their BG.

Ditto what Julia said. After learning about the appropriate diet for felines from this site with Yoshi's diabetes diagnosis, Niko began eating good quality canned from the moment he walked in the door at 12 weeks. He mostly eats Wellness chicken or turkey flavors and Evo. It's amazing but I can feel the difference in his coat within hours of eating if he ate Wellness or Friskies.

:RAHCAT Thank you both SO much! I feel better already. I was beginning to think maybe we shouldn't get the kittens. Wonderful suggestions!
