Diabetic and newly dx pancreatitis

So Friday we got our PLI test results back. Annie has pancreatitis. They prescribed 2 different Meds.

She is still only on the 2u lantus in the am. I think this would explain her numbers being too high. Vet is on holiday right now but gave me his cell phone email so we've touched base. He said when he returns he will change her dosing to BID. I know I have to watch her closely now because as her pancreatitis subsides, it will probably bring her numbers down right?

Can someone advise on diet? Or if there's anything else I can do to relieve this? Currently she is eating Wellness chicken, turkey, and beef and I feed her 3 times a day.

What was the number of the PLI test? If the vet did not give you the number, call and ask for it.

For pancreatitis, you need pain meds because it's quite painful, and that's according to humans who have have pancreatitis. Tell the vet you want buprenex; don't take no for an answer. You should have been given some sort of pain meds for pancreatitis.

You also need fluids; you can get a subQ fluids kit from your vet. The third item that is handy would be pepcid AC for the upset stomach. Get the 10mg reg strength; you can give 5mg per day. Cut the pills into quarters; give 1/4 tab at shot times. You know how it feels to have an upset stomach... you sure don't feel like eating!

Once the pancreatitis passes, you will see a drop in the BG numbers.

Treatment for pancreatitis: pain meds, subQ fluids, and pepcid. There has been talk about low fat diet, etc but it's not needed to make any changes for pancreatitis.
 
I don't have the Meds on me right now( I'm at work) but one is a steroid and one is anti- inflammatory.
When I get home I can post what they are.

Her number was 4. Something she was just above the norm
 
That's not too bad of a number; the range for negative is under 3.5, and the grey area is 3.6 to 4.0. Any above that 4.0 mark is a definite positive. If you see her meatloafing, sitting hunched over in a ball, you may want to see about giving her some pain meds.... see if you can ask the vet for the names of the items you were given - you may already have all that Annie needs.

As you have a lowish number, you are in the same boat as I have usually been with Oliver..... to get more fluids into Annie, you can be sure to 'soup' her foods. I try to put 1 part water into 2 parts food for Oliver; the extra fluids will help Annie.

If she ever seems to be a bit 'off' her foods, maybe sniffing like she is hungry but turning away, just like you if you were hungry but the smell of foods turn your stomach, try to give her 1/4 tab of pepcid, then in about an hour, she will start to act a bit more settled and have more interest in her foods.

I hope she feels better soon.
 
She has been acting pretty normal and eating like a pig. I have always been putting water in her food and I think her injectable b12 has maybe helped her pancreatitis not get too bad.

I'll post the name of the Meds when I get home tonight they are written on the package
