She has been losing weight and now they feel she is also hyperthyroid so we have started her on the transdermal gel. Her weight is now at 7.2-7.6 pounds and she is on Prozinc 2.0 daily. She is still peeing excessively. Yes we have had labs done also twice recently.

My question is if a cat is say 7.2 pounds does their weight have any factor on how much insulin they can take? I know it has to do with the numbers also but she might be too low but, we have concerns about giving her too much insulin as she went hypo in early March. Now with the hyperthyroidism that has similar symthoms it is tough to manage plus she is on a diuretic too for her heart...

Please share your thoughts,
Chloe and Cheryl thank you.

2u can be too much for a 20lb cat and 8u can be too little for a 7lb cat. Weight should not factor in to how much insulin you give. Have you started home testing? Without home testing there is no way to know how well your cat is doing on insulin. fructosamine & vet glucose readings are not enough to prevent a hypo. I’ve seen my cat go into the 30s with no outward symptoms.

Cheryl, I don't mean to pressure you, but really home testing can make all the difference in getting Chloe to a place where she is feeling better. I would really encourage you to give it a try. Or to let us know what is causing the hesitation so we can help. We have so many little tricks for getting it to work with all kinds of kitties and would love to help you.

A lot of vets say that weight determines how much insulin to give. They're incorrect. Weight doesn't really affect how much they need...their BG numbers do. I don't have experience with HyperT, but other illnesses can affect BG. Without knowing the BG, I can't tell you if 2 units is enough or not...I just don't know. The symptoms you describe indicate she isn't feeling well, but that could be HyperT...and honestly too much insulin could cause her to feel bad just like too little.
