2-11-21 I took my 10 yr old cat to vet to be treated for what I suspected was a uti because he was peeing outside his litter box. Vet didn't think he had a uti & suspected he was diabetic because he had glucose in his urine. Did blood work. His glucose was 500. Vet gave him an antibiotic shot anyway & talked about diabetes treating options. No symptoms, no weight change. Vet wants me to begin 2 units of Lantus U100 2x a day. I've been checking his bg every 12 hrs at home & his readings range 220-287. He has not urinated outside his litter box since the vet visit. He weighs 15#. I switched him from FF Gravylovers to FF Classic and he no longer has access to dry food. Does he really need 2u 2x a day? I'm so confused.

I think you should start at only 1 unit twice a day... That is the recommended starting dose. Great that you are home testing!!! Are you using a pet or human meter?

Thank you for answering. I am using a human meter, ReliOn Prime. I don't usually second guess my vet but I couldn't find research showing that 2u would be the correct dose based on home numbers below 300. After an hour ride to the vet and then with Covid rules, (a stranger coming out to the truck and taking him inside away from us), a urine sample, a shot, could that be the explanation for the 500 reading? Just trying to understand all this. Thank you again

Stress can raise the bg significantly. Also if he was eating high carb food, which he was, would keep the bg higher too. Good move going to the FF Classic. Since you are testing at home, it would be super helpful if you could put it in a spreadsheet that you could share in your signature. Here's a link to the template that we use. If you need help setting it up, one of us could help you. https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-create-a-spreadsheet.241706/

You create a signature by clicking on your name on the top right, and then choosing signature. Add info such as your pet's name, date diagnosed, type of insulin, and any other health problems. This way we aren't asking the same question over and over, the info will be right there. :)
