Diabetes & kidney issues

Hi all,
I wanted to see if anyone had thoughts on diabetic cats with kidney issues (elevated numbers). This weekend Dennis became very wobbly in his back legs, threw up, and stopped eating. We ruled out DKA and it's been determined that his problem is that his kidneys aren't working properly (they're larger than they should be, and his kidney numbers are elevated). He's at the vet getting an ultrasound to determine if the cause of this kidney issue is something like a mass or other internal issue.....Hopefully it's just a simple infection but the vet has suggested that if it is just an infection, he is going to remain a cat with poor kidney function. We will also get his kidney numbers back today, so that will help us see where he's at.....but in my head all I keep thinking is "omg is he in kidney failure??" I have NO basis for this question and the vet has not suggested it to me, but does anyone know if heightened kidney numbers cause kidney failure? Or what the symptoms of kidney failure are? Or any thoughts at all regarding similar kidney issues would be appreciated.

Update: the vet just called with his test results. His numbers are higher than they were 2 weeks ago and he's in renal failure. She wants me to take him home and give him fluids for 3 weeks and then see what f his numbers got better. No mass or tumor so that's good........ but his prognosis doesn't seem good. It hasn't hit me yet.

She said they were 5.5. Two weeks ago they were about 4.5. I don't have a print out of the lab work though.

How is his potassium number? Some kidney kitties can go low potassium and need a supplement. My Neko did and her hind legs were a little wobbly til we got that sorted.

The vet said they're a little low but she said they're not concerning her although she added a supplement to his SubQ fluids that should help. He's very very weak in his back legs. I'm worried that soon he won't be able to even get up to eat or go to the litter box. The fluids are supposed to help but the vet said not to expect improvement in his legs for "a while". How lon before your baby's legs improved?

What was 5.5?
The import blood values are creatinine phosphorous, and potassium and hematocrit Also important is urine specific gravity.
Oh jeeze. The 5.5 was just referred to as his kidney number but I think it was the creatinine. His potassium was low though. Sorry, i should've made sure to get the official names of these numbers. Information/emotional overload.

The best evidence so far for stem cells in the adult kidney suggests they might be found in the blue area, called the urinary pole. Some studies have also suggested stem cells may be found in the parts of the nephron marked in green.Double stemcell generating new cell and healthy cells.
