I was reading about this last week and it's got me very sad. It was only one study, but...it has me shaken.

Does anyone here have any experience with this correlation of Diabetes and heart failure in their cats?

I worry for Dweezil because some other things I've read about pre-heart failure are if cats have sneezing fits (Dweezy does sometimes), if they are stressed or freaked out for a prolonged period they can have a heart attack (being so highly stressed like at the vet or when seeing other cats, like Dweezy gets) and also the Diabetes connection.

He is only 6 years old and a tiny baby. :) (Well, I think so) I don't want to lose him to heart failure! I wonder how old the cats who had that connection were...it's hard to find out more information.

I, too, worry about my Rosa having a heart attack at the vet - with or without any other condition, she gets so stressed that she pants for air whenever they need to test her for anything. Now she's diabetic too, the possibility really worries me as I'm sure the strain on her system of getting so distressed can't be good for her. OK, she's 11 but I still don't think of her as an old cat and certainly not old enough for me to lose for a long time yet!

Yes! 11 is not old at all, and whenever I read things about "older" cats being classed as 7-10 years old, I am appalled. We got an email from our pet insurer the other day, saying that at 10 years old, our cover will switch to "elder". WHAT!? Our boys are mere babies!!

Your Rosa sounds like my Dweezil. Is Rosa a manx? Dweezil is. He is a lovely natured boy but just gets SO scared at the vet (not in the normal consulting room, but just in the cat ward back area). He pants on the way there too.

Exactly! :D So glad other people understand that no matter what the vet says, 11 is not old. And to look at Regan (and Rosa before she got sick with this) you wouldn't think they were more than 4 or 5 the way they run around with the younger cats. Our oldest is 18 with CKD diagnosed a couple of years ago plus a heart murmur from birth and is still going strong and getting great test results at the vet - on her good days, she still plays too!

They're not Manx cats by breed, but they and I are from the Isle of Man originally so we are Manx by nationality. It's entirely possible they do have some Manx blood in them - most of the non-pedigree cats from there do. Both of mine are exceptionally gentle and loving at home but can't cope with the vet at all so I'm trying to learn everything as quickly as possible to minimize the time she has to spend there.

I would be very interested in that article.

Squeaker went into remission after 2 months on Lantus and a switch to low carb wet food. Two weeks after he experienced congestive heart failure. That was 18 months ago. Both the diabetes and congestive heart failure were caused by my ignorance in feeding dry food (at the time) and choosing a not so good vet who used steroids too liberally.
