Diabetes, gingivitis, and feline herpes

Good evening :)

I recently took Harry to the vet and he was diagnosed with gingivitis, feline herpes, and his ongoing diabetes. I got L-Lysine recently to help out with the herpes, and it seems like it might help with the gingivitis as well. However, the L-Lysine that I got is in treat form (we have two cats and idk if the healthy one should consume the lysine, so I didn't get the powder) but I worry about the carb content of the treats. Does anyone have any input on giving him L-Lysine without messing with his blood sugar too much? Is it safe to give it to a healthy cat, in which case should I get a powder? do you have any other treatment suggestions for the gingivitis and feline herpes? He's on a raw food diet so that probably doesn't help too much.

Thank you!

I used to give l-lysine to my cats. I got it in capsules from Vitamin World and would open the capsule and sprinkle it on their food. I haven't given it since my cat was diagnosed with diabetes because I don't know if it's safe. I will ask that question in a new thread. When I got the L-Lysine in cat treats, it dried out too quickly and the cats wouldn't eat them.

The treats are probably high carb....most of them are

L-lysine is totally safe to give to a "healthy" cat as well as the diabetic. I think a lot of people here use the NOW brand powder (available on Amazon)

I also got Holistic Animal Care Yucca Intensive a few months ago for Genghis (he had to be euthanized). Has anyone heard of that? I suppose if L-Lysine is okay to give diabetic cats, then this would be, too. I have a feeding situation with my kitten, Chico, pushing aside Chloe and eating her food. But that's the least of my worries right now. He is now called Chico Grande.

That's good to know, thank you :) I rushed to the store yesterday because he had a sneezing fit and the treats were all they had available, but he had blood on his nose from so many sneezes so I decided that immediately getting something was more important. I'll look into replacing it with the powder instead and just use the treats to get it back under control for now. Thank you!

There is an ingredient in L-Lysine that is not good for cats but I forget what it is. You'll have to research it on the web like I did. I hope Harry is doing better now.

arganine sounds familiar. I can tell you that L-lysine didn't help my Genghis. He kept sneezing more and more, leaving strips of mucous everywhere. When he lost interest in food completely is when I decided to put him out of his pain.
Newer research suggests that L-lysine doesn't really help with lots of the things it's used to treat, including herpes viruses, URIs and FIV.

Maybe it is ECID/ My Tuxie has feline herpes and when he has his outbreaks I give him lysine powder for a few days and it has always helped. I have been doing this for over 2 years.

Well, that was a short run with it, then! He's been sneezing a lot less lately and his sinuses seem to be healing at least a little bit, so I'll just stop to prevent any negative side effects and will look into healthier alternatives now that we've got it under control. Thanks for the info, everyone!
