Diabetes & Cushing's Disease

Does anyone have any experience with Diabetes and Cushing's Disease? Jasmine has not been officially DX with Cushing's but I am pretty confident that she has it with her symptoms. The vets around here are no help with her DX and pass everything off. I would appreciate any help, advice etc you may have. Thanks.

My GA, Bear Man, had Iatrogenic Cushing's, which was caused by long term steroid use. I am not of much help when it comes to experience with testing or treatment, as Bear Man was diagnosed based on his physical signs (pot belly, hair loss, unkempt coat, thin fragile skin, and muscle wasting). The treatment in his case would have been to remove the steroids, which was not possible for him. I used extreme caution in protecting his fragile skin, for instance by not giving sub Q fluids for his renal disease, and by combing his hair gently with a baby comb, being careful not to pull on the skin.

I do have some links, which I hope you find helpful:

I know that at least two others on the Board have dealt with this. I don't think they are around regularly, but you may be able to send them a PM: Amy and Pedro, and Cheryl and Whiskers. I believe that Pedro is still doing well, but sadly Whiskers is a GA. Both kitties were treated with Trilostane.

What sort of symptoms is Jasmine having?

Hi Linda, thanks for the links. The symptoms Jasmine is experiencing and the biggest one is the excessive drinking & peeing, she has no interest in playing and she sleeps all the time, she had some fur shaved in January and none has yet to grow back, she is not shedding any fur at all which is another big one because normally this time of year she sheds a ton and her fur is a bit duller than usual. She does have some wart masses/tiny cysts on her body. I have also noticed drier stools. I just had her tested for thyroid and CRF and all came back normal. Her dental is good, just a slight bit of tarter. Other than that, she has a good strong appetite and is on a portion controlled diet (4 x daily). I have her back on Lantus insulin just starting a few weeks ago. She was in remission for a year. I noticed after 8 months in remission her glucose #'s started increasing slightly but not enough to put her back on insulin. Once her numbers reached an average of 162 to 216, I decided to get her back on insulin BID.

Jodi, where in NS are you? Karen is in Sydney and has an AMAZING vet and we have Shirley in Halifax.

Amanda used to have some good resources on cushings but I'm sure there are other sources more up-to-date now

Good luck!!

Jen

Hi Jodi and Jasmine,
I myself haven't had a Cushing's kitty - rather one with acromegaly. But in our hi dose group we try to support those of us with cats with diseases like these. If your kitty does indeed have Cushing's we love for you to come join us. In the sticky we have written up there - we have some info on cushings altho Linda is more the expert on this. But please let us know if we can help you at all!

Wishing you both all the best!

Thanks Everyone!

@ Jen - We are about an hour from Halifax.

@ Patti - Thank you so much for the support group invite. It is certainly looking more and more like Jamsine may have Cushing's disease in addition to her diabetes. I am going to have her tested for it here shortly.
