Is there a correlation?
What percentage of sugar cats develop hyperthyr. and what percentage of hyperthyr. cats develop diabetes?

My cat was recently diagnosed with a hyperthyroid so I'm interested in your inquiry as well. Hyperthyroid is one the most common hormone disorders in felines, so I suspect there is a higher percentage there. Since I am not certain, I recommend the following web site....

....I came across the blog of Dr. Mark Peterson, DVM, a world-renowned specialist in feline endocrinology. I have not had the chance to peruse his blog/written publications, but I am pretty certain he has the answers you're looking for. In any case, it's a very informative blog to read.

I've been owned by five hypert kitties, but none of them were diabetics. Interestingly (at least to me) four of the five were related. Spunky was the mom adopted from the Humane Society. I did not know she was pregnant, thankfully she had only three beautiful kittens. We kept the entire family. All of them were diagnosed with hypert at about age 12, Spunky and her kittens Gett, Trouble and Keesha.

I'm interested in what treatment, if any, you pursued. I have a friend who had the thousand dollar cure for her 10 y o female.
No way can I afford that.

Thanks - I will pore over it.
I like your handle. I checked coats in a posh resto many years ago - a quarter tip was average per coat. I made good, under the table money and met a lot of nice people, plus I could eat just about anything from the kitchen cept for entrees. The hours stunk tho - place stayed open til well after midnight ( bar scene)

Ruth, for one cat I did the surgery, had one thyroid gland removed. That was for Spunky, she was free of hypert for one year but it came back. Three kitties stayed on Tapazole (generic). I used to buy the 10mg tablet and quarter them to save money. They ate the tap in their food. I tried the ear gel tapazole but it didn't work for my kitties.

I did do the I-131 for my boy Gett. He was fine before that but unfortunately, right after the treatment his kidneys started to fail. We supported his kidneys with diet and subq fluids, but he didn't make it past a year.

If you remain with oral meds be sure to have the T4 levels checked. An unregulated hypert kitty can get high blood pressure and bladder infections. High blood pressure can lead to stroke and blindness.

I'm no vet or expert, so of course talk to your vet.

There is a hypert group on Yahoo.http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/feline-hyperT/
