Diabetes and Hyperthyroidism together

My last cat had hyperthyroidism and was managed well for about 7 years with transdermal methamizole.

Honey just came back with hyperthyroidism on recent blood panel. :banghead:

I am going to start the transdermal methamizole for her since I have used it before, pills are much cheaper, but difficult to get in the cat.

Anyone dealing with both diabetes and hyperthyroidism in the same cat? Have you seen any issues dealing with both at the same time?

On the plus side, the vet is happy with her glucose levels, lol...

Thanks.

Bumping you up. I have no knowledge of hyperthyroidism other than what I have read here. I know there are/were some dealing with both but can't remember who they are.

If you don't get a response, bump it up again after the holidays. There will be more around then.

Hi Julie -
I've always adored Honey's picture:) I'm sorry about the hyperthyroid diagnosis.

After first treating with methamizole for about a year, I went for the "gold standard" I-131 (Iodine injection) treatment in October 2018.
In our case, Tina was overtreated, which supposedly only happens about 10% of the time, and is now on Levothyroxine to boost her underactive thyroid.

Three months after treatment, her BG was over 500. So we had hyperthyroidism - that turned to hypo - before diabetes. Then Tina happened to go OTJ a couple months after we finally got her thyroid back to a decent level. The two diseases together aren't all that uncommon in people (me for one) or cats (I don't think), and just create a bigger balancing act. The kidneys need to be carefully looked after too.

Scritches for Honey :cat:
