Diabetes and FIV

My one and half year old kitten has just been diagnosed with diabetes. However, I found out when she was only weeks old that she contracted FIV from her mother. The FIV has made her life not terrible but a little more frustrating than it should be. We had lots of issues with worms (non-stop) for a year, a very slow healing process after being spayed, allergic reaction to her stitches, and now this new diagnosis. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who has a cat with FIV or maybe even in the same situation as I am that could offer some insight and/or advice.

Thanks!!

I don't remember who but I know I have seen other kitties on the board with FIV and diabetes. It is managable and the people here will be able to help you. If your kitty currently takes any medicines it would help if you would post what they are also if you would post about her diet. Also some more information about the diabetes diagnosis - blood glucose numbers if you have them, the insulin prescribed - type and dose.

The most important thing for you to do right now to keep your kitty safe is start learning how to home test if you aren't already. If you need information about how to do it just ask.

Good morning - and welcome!

I've got 2 babies w/ FIV and I know what you mean - 3 rounds of antibiotics to cure the slightest thing, compared to one round for the healthy kids.

You said the kitty was diagnosed w/ FIF while very young. Have you had it re-tested?

The reason I ask, is I rescued a litter from a vacant house after their mom was hit by a car. Bottle fed them and raised them, and while on the formula, 2 got REALLY REALLY sick. I took them to the vet and they took a teeny teeyn tiny blood sample from the little paws. Both came back as FIV+ and they recommended destroying the entire litter. Not one to take suggestions well, I said no, I'll raise them. When they were larger and healthier they were all tested, and all came back normal... my point is that maybe it got a false positive on the test?

My FIV boys Moochie Pooch and Stanley are truly some of the most loving in the household. Every time you sit down they're on your lap! Both are healthy, although Moochie has a tendency for bladder infections. MP is about 9 and Stanley about 5 yrs old.

Or, as they got older, their immune systems became strong enough to clear the virus from the blood.

Seconding the re-test at some point.

One of my foster cats, Jacob, was FIV, had diabetes and heart disease when he came to us. He is doing mahvelous, babeee....

BUT.... has your kitty been retested for FIV? Some times you get lucky and the cat's immune system beats the FIV. If he/she has not been retested for FIV after 1 year, I would definitely retest.

IF still positive, that still isnt' the worse you can face by any means.

Jacob has been diet-controlled for over a year... His heart disease prognosis has improved greatly and his FIV, well, that is the least of our concerns with him.
