Hello!
Yes, Jewel was diagnosed as diabetic in March of 2012. We followed tight regulation [BG testing at home and Lantus shots twice a day]. She went into remission and only required shots for three months. She has not been on Lantus since June 2012. A random BG spot check two weeks ago produced an elevated BG leve. We have been BG testing regularly and she had always been in a normal range.
She turns 12 years old this month. We took her to the Vet last week for a Chem panel check. We wanted to make sure her thyroid, renal function, CA level, etc. were ok. Her labs were pretty good. Her creatinine and BUN were a toward the higher end of the normal range, but Jewel is on a high protein diet. [I have read that BUN and creatine tend to be slightly higher in diabetic cats on high protein diets.] Our Vet was not concerned.
Jewel will NOT touch canned food. We have tried every trick in the book! We have her on EVO chicken dried food that is 7% carb....I believe that is the lowest dry cat food that you can get. We still keep attempting to get her to eat canned. She won't even eat any meats we prepare homemade. We'll keep trying!
I had read about Dia-Ionx, but do not know anyone personally that has used it. My Vet said that he does not know how effective it is, but that he feels it is safe to try. I was just thinking that it might be a good supplement to have. Thankfully, Jewel is feeling great and very active. Not at all like she was when she was first diagnosed! I was just wondering if the added minerals/potassium might help regulate her even more??
Question....has anyone had a cat that has gone into remission more than once? Jewel is on a very low dose of insulin at this time and it keeps her within normal range. She gets .25 or .5 units twice a day. Praying that we can achieve remission again!
Thanks for you help!
