Hi, I'm new, so please forgive me if I go about this the wrong way. I desperately need advice for my recently diagnosed 11 year old cat, Cracker. I (and my vet) believe he's quite constipated, for which the vet gave me Laxatone. Cracker appears to be worse after a few days of taking it, seeming EXTREMELY sensitive around the back hips / stomach area. He has been hiding and devoid of energy; almost scurrying away when I come near. The ingredients on the Laxatone list corn syrup, malt syrup, and cane molasses.... could these ingredients be spiking his BGs? His level when last checked on Thursday was 297.
I'm completely helpless and his behavior is terrifying me. Thank you so, so much!

Did your vet check to make sure he isnt obstipated, meaning blocked? After the poop has sat in the colon longer than normal it dries out and is harder to get out. He may need an enema at the vet.

I was giving my Merlyn and my civie Carly Miralax(polyethylene glycol) . Its an odorless and tasteless powder. You can mix it in the food. It is an osmotic meaning that its a good idea to add a bit of water to his canned food. The problem with this is that the poop already in there will not be affected by the miralax much, so you need to make sure he is ABLE to poop.

Sending pooping vibes!

Thanks so much, Lisa! The vet said (just by external exam with his hands) that he could tell there's some dry feces in the colon. I have seen him poop a tiny bit, so do you know if there's a possibility of just partial blockage?

Its good that he got some out, so he might be ok without enema. The miralax will take a bit of time to work, and it works best given regularly. I started with 1/8th teaspoon, you can increase it if needed but be aware that when it does come out it might be diarrhea once the dried stuff comes out if you have given too much. Adding water to canned food can also help hydrate the colon.

My cat was just at the vet today with constipation. My cat was blocked up all the way and he, too, is pooping...but it's hard and dry and usually just one poop. So I took him to the vet and they gave him enemas (2) which helped immensely. Sounds like that might not be a bad idea for your kitty, although if the vet didn't suggest it, you might want to ask him about it.

Good luck.

I had this problem (I mean my cat had this problem  ) recently when I was on vacation with him in California.
The morning of the vet appointment to get the enema, he did a big poop. I hope the same for you.
Since we got home, J.D. has had 1/8 teaspoon of Miralax once a day.
