? Dental Work & Remission

My Jack the Cat has been OTJ for 15 months. He is scheduled for some dental work in October.

My greatest fear is the dental work would cause him to go out of remission and become insulin dependent again.

Am I correct to be fearful, or do cats in remission do just fine with dental work?

Any thoughts are most appreciated.
 
If jack has an infection in his teeth that would make his numbers rise. If it a regular cleaning his numbers may rise some but shouldnt sty there unless he was borderline. Or?

Hi Jane,

Looking after teeth and gums is really important for both insulin-dependent and diet-controlled diabetic cats. Indeed, a dental problem is one of the leading reasons why cats fall out of remission, so it's good that you're looking after Jack's litte tooty pegs. :)

I have seen recommendations here to get an X-ray done after any extractions to double-check that no stray shards are left behind as that might cause post-dental problems.

Thank you for your guidance. He has one tooth that looks bad otherwise it would just be a cleaning. Will be testing him throughout this process to keep an eye on his numbers. He's been diet controlled for over a year and hope he stays that way.

And I will ask for the X-ray.
