Dental tomorrow ... Convenia?

I can't remember if Rhubarb was given Convenia last time she had her dental done. I'm sure she has had it once before for a uti with no issues. Should I be asking that she not get it? If so, how do I do it so that I don't sound like I am just being a pain, rude, or whatever. I know drs can be sensitive, but do vets get like that too?
I've been seeing some people posting about Convenia and of course now I am worried!

I certainly wouldn't worry about asking the question! Your kitty can't ask so you need to. If your vet (or Dr for that matter) is that sensitive or ego driven you should get a new one! When my late cat had dental cleaning and extractions they did give him a shot of Convenia. He seemed to tolerate Convenia well as he had had it previously with no ill affects for various issues (fight abscess, bladder infection etc)
 
Just tell them up front that you've read some information about some cats having problems with Convenia so you don't want her to have it (it's not a good antibiotic for dental issues anyway)

Make sure it's marked on her records

Also, while you're at it, ask what they give for pain. You don't want them using Metacam because it's got a black box warning due to kidney issues.

When China had her first dental with the new vet, I just flat out put on her intake records "No Convenia/No Metacam"
 
I remember using metacam for mel and nika after spay before moving here- crazy tiny doses, iirc. I'd forgot about that one being hard on kidneys. Thanks for the reminder!
 
Hi. I take my girls to a wonderful dental specialist. He wanted to give Willow Convenia, and I questioned it. He told me that Cerenia is approved in Europe for oral pathogens, and it is used for that here in the US as well. He said it would absolutely address the type of bacteria that was present. And, it apparently did. She did not have any ill effects. Mia has also had it in the past without any issues.

The scary thing about it is how long it stays in the system, so IF a cat had a bad reaction to it, there would be no way to 'get rid' of it quickly. I do not know how common those bad reactions are, but thankfully, we did not have problems.
 
My vet who is an internist also gave Max a shot of convenia after a dental as well. He was fine. I was worried since it can present problems and lasts in the system for weeks and can’t be reversed. You can give oral antibiotics if you are worried.
 
I only used Convenia, for BunBun after a dental. He had extensive extractions and was very hard to administer oral meds so so administer oral meds after the dental risked upsetting the extraction sites. That vet also used SR (sustained release) Buprenorphine, that is one shot good for 2-3 days.
