I just saw Mogs post about her baby and dental and it reminded me that I have some questions for you guys.

My old vet said that they do dental exams with deep cleaning with anesthesia for.... *gulp* starting at 1500.00 PER CAT.

My new vet said that he does deep cleaning and dental care without anesthesia for 75.00 per cat.

My cats are both pretty bad when it comes to their teeth. They ate a dry food only diet until the age of 7 and then got switched to canned food only. I have a tooth brush for them and kitty toothpaste but I have yet to really brush their teeth because I'm scared that it might hurt them if they already have dental issues. I do let them lick the toothpaste off of the brush though which Ginger loves.

I'm not sure if they have any cavities but they both definitely have plaque and tartar buildup.

What do you guys think of anesthesia free dentistry? What will happen if they actually need a tooth pulled, do they just give a local injection to numb the area or what? I should probably call them and ask but it's Saturday lol.

My cat mr. B has has extractions and cleanings. Anesthesia is a must for both, in my book. I cant comprehend how it could be done any other way.

The cost for full cleanings including xrays was around $500. Extractions depending on difficulty around $100 each. This is in MA.

One sounds too expensive and one too cheap.

I had a vet in rural GA do dental with anesthesia for about $250 (no extractions). Fern just got a dental, with anesthesia, x-rays, 5 extractions and all drugs for about $900. I think it would have been $600 if there weren't extractions. $75 is defiantly way too low and if their teeth are as bad as you describe they really need x-rays and anesthesia and possibly extractions.

Okay just that info alone is enough to help me. I'm going to give them a call on Monday and just ask as many questions as I can and see what they say. They are a discount veterinary office so everything that they do is extremely affordable. On one hand it wouldn't surprise me if the 75 covered everything except for the extractions but we'll see. I just went and read their website and it looks like the 75 is just for cleaning but I still think that they will do extractions at an extra cost. I can't wait to find out. Until then here is their site and fee schedule.
