Dental concerns

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I have posted. Jimmy has been doing well the last year, healthy and regulated. In the last couple days we noticed that he was having difficulty eating, drooling, and mouth pain. We just got home from the vet with antibiotic Clindamycin and have a tooth extraction scheduled for Friday morn . They could not draw blood for a panel. Jimmy put up a fight and howled. I think the tech touched the sore side of his mouth. They plan to try again Friday before the dental procedure. They said they might have to use a mild sedative for that, which worries me being right before the anesthesia for the procedure. Truly, we are worried about all of this. Jimmy is over 14yrs old but he is my BABY! What experiences do you all have with dental procedures? Effect on bg? Advice?

My vet had me fast him from midnight on and give half the dose of insulin in the morning before the dental. He did well.

You are going to feed him 4 hours before undergoing anesthesia?? Does the vet know and agree to that? It should be a good 8-12 hours since food or you risk them vomiting while under. If the dental condition is that bad and there is no known conditions other than the diabetes can you do the dental without the pre-bloodwork? Some people don't ever do it. (Not that I agree with that method, but its an option if the dental NEEDS to be done).

I've always had to withhold food for 12 hours before the procedure, which means removing the food at midnight.

SO.... we give a reduced dose at PMPS because the usual overnight food is GONE.

We test in the morning, and either SKIP the shot or give a reduced dose if over 200. (usually SKIP the morning shot)

When we bring kitty home after the dental, we again test BG before deciding on dose and also see if kitty is eating or not.

Skip shot if not eating, skip shot if BG below our cutoff.

Thanks for all the imput. The dental procedure has to be done. The bad tooth is causing Jimmy a lot of pain, thus he is not eating well. The plan af food in the morning at 3:30 is the vet's plan. Jimmy will have 2oz of his wet food and reg shot. I'll ask the vet about the risk of vomit during the procedure though. I think I might give a little smaller shot too. It has been a year since we did blood work, so I think it's important to do. They will have the results before any anesthesia is giving.
