OK- so Rudy has plaque and a cracked molar that needs to be extracted. They said it will be $600! I had NO idea it would be that much.
Covers everything from medicine during and after to anesthesia and blood work done before. Xrays weren't mentioned...is that normal?

Also, how does this effect his diabetes? They said he could have normal medicine in the morning and nothing past 7am (his shot is at 6am). He would be home before 6pm for his next shot and feeding. Does any of the medicine mess with his levels? They are including Zithromax antibiotic for after as well. So many questions...lol

The price seems about right. It depends a lot with where you are located. I paid abut $100 but that included more extractions.
The no food after 7 AM is a bit out of the ordinary but if your vet is comfortable with it I have nothing to say. My vet says for diabetic cats 1/2 food and 1/2 insulin in morning if BG is "normal" in the morning. Some vets say not food after midnight and no insulin in the morning.

I have Bud on a Wellness plan at Banfield that includes a dental. Without the plan my total for everything would have been about $890. With the plan my total was about $515. This included 4 extractions, bloodwork, and all meds. I don't think X-rays were done.

My vet also said 1/2 food and 1/2 insulin in the morning. Bud was sent home with Clavamox so I can't answer how Zithromax affects numbers.

Zithromax (Azithromycin- generic) is just an antibiotic and should not have any effect on BG. The stress of the dental and recovery together with maybe different eating amount may effect BG.

I wonder if my vet has the best information for diabetes.. 1/2 for food and insulin sounds appropriate. They gave me a package for a wellness plan but it really didn't end up saving me anything at all. it would cost an additional $200 on top of the $600 and really only adds in his shots and one urinalysis for the year.

Thank you for putting your dental costs out there for me to compare....I really didn't think it would cost this much :-( I can't believe that they want this done yearly.

There's 3 kinds of Wellness plans and the lowest one doesn't include a dental. If you have the plan that doesn't include the dental, I think you can upgrade to one that does. I have the highest plan, the special care. I feel like it's saved me a ton.

Karen, I just had a dental Friday the 13th....total cost was a little over $700 with x-rays, 3 extractions, pre-anesthesia bloodwork and post dental pain medication (including a shot of Convenia which I had CLEARLY marked on her records to never give....GRRRR)

It is important that they have the equipment to do x-rays...many problems with diabetic cats are going on under the gums and the only way to see what's going on is with x-rays

So your rate is really close to mine too :-)
I don't even see x-rays in the itemized estimate that they gave me. I set up his appointment for this Friday. Not happy that I have to drop him off at 9am and pick him up at 5. he is going to be stressed out being there all day. I'll have to call and ask about x-rays. I will also do 1/2 insulin and 1/2 food and bring a can of food for him in case they need to feed him before I get there. I can't think of anything else....
The estimate lists things like nerve block, but doesn't say what it is. It does say Torbugestic injection with surgery. Wonder if I need to Google every line item? lol

Use of antibiotics after the dental depends upon what is found and the extractions done. Antibiotics before are only called for for if there is an active tooth abscess. not done routinely.
It is always desirable to have x-rays available since what is fund and what is done determines if x-rays are required.

It seems that they are having me give him antibiotics after the treatment as a preventative measure. do you think I should question this?

I am going to tell them to add x-rays to my bill- if we are doing this, I want to do it right :-)

Thanks for the advice FDMB!

The first dental, China had 8 extractions...but there wasn't any abscesses or infection so they didn't send her home with antibiotics and said they weren't necessary. She did fine

The second one, she did have an abscess under the gumline ....they extracted the tooth, cleaned out the infected root and gave her that Convenia shot I'd told them not to...when I calmed down about the Convenia, they told me she would have needed antibiotics due to the abscess (without x-rays, they may not have found this problem)

I'd just tell your vet if there's no indication of infection when they're doing the dental, you'd rather not give medications that aren't needed
