delaying a dose for more than 3 hours

hi, I will be out for the day soon and there is no one who can give Angel his meds and be there to test him mid shot. The vet nurse is away.

By the time I get back it would be 6 hours after his normal dose time. Would it hurt just doing this once? I've thought of everything and everyone, and everyone is either busy or lives too far away, the local vets will be closed and the other one is too far since I don't have transport. He is on .75 of Prozinc but just going back up to 1 unit.

To minimize the impact of the time lag, you could have shot 3 hours later this am and 3 tonight, so no one shot was too extremely late. He'll be higher than you want, but so it goes. When you have enough notice, shift the shot time 30 minutes each day in the direction you need, and then shift back by 30 minutes each day to get back on schedule.

And maybe recruit a few more folks to have more to ask when scheduling issues happen.

hi BJM,

He's due 2 doses before I have to miss one, he should actually be having one now but he was 6.6 (world reading) on the alphatrak.
So I could test him again in 2 hours, planning to give this shot at 2pm, next at 4am (aaargh) and following at 6pm. Only problem being I leave the house at 10.15 am so won't be around to test him at +7. Oh well...I'll figure out what's safest for him, and thanks for the help.

That's a lovely AMBG, Cassandra! (Would be around 5.6 on a human meter, maybe)

Are you able to give a shot at 6pm this evening since he's running low today, and then 6am tomorrow morning? (Then 6pm in the evening again.) Then you could get a +4 before you have to go out tomorrow..?
We're definitely seeing an improving picture there for Angel, Cassandra. If in doubt about whether to give a shot I'd definitely err on the side of caution, especially if you can't be around to monitor. A missed shot is no big deal in the scheme of things.

PS. Feeling rather guilty here about your dilemma, because I know where you're going tomorrow! ;-)

ahhh no need, it's entirely my choice. There will be times when I HAVE to be away from the house for 8 hrs plus and this will be good practice.

Just given Angel his dose now at 13.5 as he was 9.1 /164 and eating, had a long chat with Ruth and feel easier about giving doses when his bg is a bit lower, as long as I am around to check on him. My absolute minimum is around 8.3/149 though. She suggested putting him back up to 1 unit but since he was 8.3/149 last night I gave him just under 1, and the same today since he had such a lovely low +12 number.

If I do him around 3am it means I can test at +7 just before I go out. The prozinc seems to have a later nadir than the caninsulin.

So looking forward to meeting you xx
