defeating DM by diet

Assuming a cat was caught early and the numbers were not too high with no sign of other problems how long should you wait before giving up and starting injecting insulin?
Lets say they were on a high carb dry diet and switched to a ultra low carb dry and low carb canned combo.

It depends on how high the numbers are. I would say if daily numbers are higher than normal but mostly below the renal threshold (240-270), you can continue with diet and weight loss (if needed) indefinitely as long as they dont creep too high. If the numbers are mostly above 300, I would give the diet change 3-5 days with testing and then start insulin therapy immediately.
