Diabetic Cats in Need (DCIN)

Bastian, Stefani's foster diabetic, has been staying with me since early August. It appears that Bastian will be going home to Stefani this weekend.
I changed Batian to Levemir from Lantus when he got here. Stefani's records showed that Bastian had been a bouncy boy on Lantus. This boy could go from the 400s to the 40s in the course of 3 hours. Stefani and I thought Levemir might smooth him out. Nope. Same thing.
But I have been able to smooth him with split shots. Since 8/23/10, he has been getting part of his shot at PS and the other part generally at +2 to +3.5, depending on my schedule and his BG level. He is now pretty smoothed out, on .5U and .25U split shots, staying in the mid 150s and below. With her work schedule, Stefani will likely only be able to split shot at PS and +2. For that to work properly, he likely will have to be lowered to .25 and .25, or maybe change to .25 and .5. I will start working on that over the next few days.

Bastian has gained about a pound since coming here. Not good. But he has access to the entire house most of the day, and thus access to everyone else's food, which he is quick to sneak. His food is closely controlled at night as he stays behind closed doors either in the guest room or my room.

Bastian took about 3 weeks to settle in with the cats and with us. At first he had a flat affect, walking by cats and people like they were invisible. Now he plays with my boy Casey, gets a little individual playtime with me in the morning, and gives full eye contact when asking for food or attention. Stefani is right; Bastian is the easiest cat to test.
Bastian is really sweet, and plays very enthusiastically for a 10 YO cat. He is front declawed, and recently had a dental. He's ready to adopt!! More information about Bastian is on his DCIN Blog page here.
