Tomorrow am my kitty will have eye surgery. The vet said only gas and probably 30 minutes under. Any pre-surgery day suggestions? He is an elderly guy and that is her biggest concern.
Thank you,
Ceecee

Give him lots of loving, like you always do.

Sending healing vines and successful surgery vines for your kitty.

Ask your vet about the feeding and insulin schedule - you probably need to starve him for 12 hours prior to the surgery but you dont want to shoot him with insulin when he isnt eating..

Let us know how he gets on!

Yes Wendy, no food after 8pm. His regular vet has been having me give subq fluids with b vitamins 60ml. He got some on Friday. Not sure if I should give today, not confident in ANY of what that vet told me now.
Thank you,
Ceecee

Sending you some 'straightforward-and-successful-operation' vibes for your little guy tomorrow, and a big reassuring (((hug))) to you.

Do you have something of yours that he can have in the cage with him? A T-shirt that smells of you, maybe, as a little comforter for him?

Wendy,
The eye vet said it would be ok, just don't know if he really needs them (per reg vet, who does NOT answer in a timely manner, if at all)
Elizabeth,
I sure will! Thank you.

Do any of you send a syringe or 2 with a pre-measured dose? I am considering that. They did not say how they determine how much they would give, if he needs it. They said they take 3 bg readings. My kitty takes tiny amounts. Something happened at a regular vet years ago....not a good memory!

I wouldn't premeasure as insulin needs may alter.

You might ask about regional nerve blocks that could be given after the gas anesthesia induction. It helps prevent 'wind up'.

Not sure what a regional nerve block is. I am pretty sure the vet said only gas. Surgeon said if I have any questions to call the answering service and they would get to her. Maybe I should compile some questions. (not too sure what all to ask) The sheet they gave me is very basic.

I never heard of regional nerve blocks for eye surgeries although they are sometime used in dental/oral surgery.

I said ask, because I don't know if regional blocks are possible for eye surgery. If they are, it may help with recovery to use them.
