I'm questioning my decision to bring Dax home at all.

To answer some questions that have been asked - Dax will be 10 next month. I rescued him about 2 months ago. His spread sheet is here. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... sp=sharing

The reason I freaked and gave 1 unit at seeing only 1 pink number is because it was very clear Dax was in trouble. Very lethargic, not himself at all. He would not eat. Then his numbers crashed, and I took him to the ER, and then to my regular vet to be monitored for a day, and have pancreatitis, infections, etc ruled out. The numbers probably crashed because I couldn't get him to eat before I gave the insulin, that was my mistake.

No underlying cause was found. My vet was doing 1.5 units BID. Last night he told me his value was in the 800s, and he gave him 2 units with his meal. This morning it was down to 179 when he gave him his food and did 1.5 insulin again. When I checked him at dinner time, he was back to 279. I just checked him after giving him his food and insulin, and it only went to 260. I'll check him again in a couple hours.

He is on Lantus, canned food only, 4% carb. He is not doing well. Not just his numbers. He is lethargic, withdrawing from any kind of attention from me or his brother, the complete opposite of the cat I'm use to. He was like this before I took him to the ER. I'm really feeling like that this may be the end.

I know it's discouraging, but give Dax a couple couple days to bounce back, he's been through a lot. I am sure he is exhausted.

It's encouraging he is eating.

I wont bore you with the whole long story, but I had a similar situation w/ Katie about a a year and half ago. I thought for sure we were going to lose her. But she slowly bounced back. And she is still here and doing great (finger's crossed).

With his history, he seems extra sensitive to insulin, just keep testing, feeding (I would give small amounts several times a day), and lots of TLC.

Sending lots of prayers.

I'm going to see how it goes for a few days, but honestly I'm not holding out to much hope at this point. I've done rescue and worked with sick animals long enough to see the signs of one just giving up, and that's what I'm seeing with Dax. Eating is good, but the rest of his behavior and attitude tells me that he just isn't wanting to fight anymore.
