I'm watching my daughters cat for the next week and he is very uncooperative in letting me give him his injections. This is new. He used to be ok about it but now he hisses, screams and scratches when I try to go near him. I had to cover him with a towel this morning to give him his shot but it was so stressful for him that he pooped.. stressful for me to and I got scratched up. I'm in tears here. In have no one to help me give him his injections.

I am sorry you are having trouble, especially as you are being a great grandma caring for him. Where exactly are you shooting him? Can you describe your technique?

Lots of us shoot while they are eating. Have you tried that?

Welcome to the board, perhaps if you can answer some questions we can help more

1. what kind of insulin is it and how much?
2. are you rubbing the spot with alcohol? or pinching afterward?
3. are you making a tent first?
4. what size /type of syringes are you using?

thanks
Wendy

Welcome!
Awwwwchchc! The injection is meant to go in right under the kitty's skin or basically parallel to the kitty's body. That, usually does not cause discomfort, however, if the shot goes into the muscles, it can hurt like the dickens. We can help you with your method of injection. Take care.
Best wishes, Sophie

In the past I have given it to him by tenting the skin and while he is eating. For some reason this time he won't let me near him, period. He is on lantus.

Does he let you pet him, at all? I don't think the little tiny needles hurt that much. I was just wondering if you could pet him and quickly give the injection while petting him. Does he get any freeze dried or other 100% meat treats, that you could butter him up with?

He lets me pet him rarely. I did give him his injection this evening when he was a bit sleepy and calmer. Hope it goes okay in the morning. Thanks for your comments.

Maybe give him a good 15-20 minutes of very active play to tire him out. It may help the insulin work, too, and improve the relationship between you a bit.

He is on a prescription diet and cannot have any type of treats. This is the only cat I know that cannot eat wet food without vomiting. Been that way since he was a kitten.

Is the vomiting due to 'scarf & barf' ? (eating so much so fast they can't hold it down) You can slow down the meal by spreading the wet food across the plate, to make them work a bit harder to get it if so. (and / or offering smaller more frequent meals)

There are treats that have no additives, the hands down favorite in my house is the freeze dried chicken, they go nuts over it.

You might see if there are any high school or college aged students interested in veterinary medicine or veterinary technology who would like to get experience handling and monitoring a diabetic cat. Guidance counselors or staff in a vet tech/pre-vet program could recommend, refer, or post notices for you.

We never did figure out why he can't keep wet food down. He is on a prescription diet since he has a problem of developing crystals in his urine. He is also feed in small increments over a few hours to keep him from vomiting.

Last couple of days haven't been to bad. Had to wrap him in a towel one other time. He seems more fractious in the morning. Much calmer for his second shot.

We are both doing much better. I have been able to give Sully his injections without having to resort to the towel. I don't know if it's just because he's calmer due to being here longer or I'm calmer. I now wait until he starts to lounge around after his meal and then I'm able to stroke him a bit and give him his shot. He will still swat at me after the injection is done, but the growling and screaming has stopped.

Just as an FYI, I have had feliway plugged into a couple of my outlets and sprayed where he normally lays and it didn't do much for him.

Daughter and son-in-law return Saturday.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement.

Since things are calmer, could you go back to your very first post on this thread, click the Edit button in the upper right of the post, and unselect the 911 button?

Thanks.
