Darker, sticky stool - Ondansetron or something else?

Hi all,

On Saturday, I started giving Babs 1/2 a tablet of Ondansetron morning and evening (in addition to Cerenia) for nausea and vomiting. This has been in addition to about 4 mg of prednisolone for diagnosed GI lymphoma and pancreatitis. Constipation has been an ongoing issue, and so I've been dosing Miralaz as well.

Beginning late Monday night and again last night/this afternoon, her stools have been darker and sticky (not quite diarrhea). I don't see blood in them and they aren't black but they are darker than normal. I just came home for lunch to find her back end mess and so I put her in the sink (she's 19, arthritic, and a very good girl).

I initially thought that she has overloaded on the Miralax and so I did not give her any today. But could this instead be the Ondansetron or Prednisolone? This did not start until after I begin giving Ondansetron.

For tonight, I'll skip the Ondansetron and see if it makes a difference.

I'll clean her up daily if necessary, but I'm worried this is a progression of the Pancreatitis.

Thank you.

I'm not sure if Ondasentron could cause something like that I don't think so and I haven't used prednisolone but loose enough stool to make her a mess is something you do need to monitor and darker stool could still be blood just not fresh blood maybe you will need to test it for blood just to be sure

Thank you Veronica. I will get a sample and take it in.

I'm not seeing that Ondasentron would cause this either. I am seeing that Miralax can also cause issues, and she's been on it for some time now. It may of course be something else as well.

I dropped off a sample; they did not find any blood. I discontinued the Miralax and I resumed the Zofran, as she definitely seemed to feel better with it.

Hi there, I hope she's doing better today. I wanted to add, in case this information is helpful, that the ondasetron can cause temporary fecal leak, depending on the dose. I was unaware of this until I was told this yesterday by Chuckie's internist, when I refilled his script for ondasetron. Never knew, never had an issue, but apparently it can be a side effect. (Not saying that that is what you're dealing though).

Thank you for letting me know and for asking. This somewhat describes what has been happening.

She's not great today. I'm reaching out to my vet to ask about alternative pain killers, as her pain seems to be getting worse. Last night was pretty rough. We're both having a hard time.

I hope she starts feeling better, and I hope you can get a bit of rest during the day, they do seem to have rougher nights than days so hang in there, please let us know how she's doing

Still you do need to consider what you would give her instead of Miralax since Miralax and Zofran are for different issues, Miralax helps with constipation and Zofran with nausea and vomiting, maybe you could give her some SEB that could help it is not as effective with constipation as Miralax but it does help or some pumpkin
