Dante was diagnosed in sept 2013 and put on lantis 2x a day and on hills prescription diet m/d dry food as he will rarely eat wet food.As of a month ago he was taken off insulin when he had a hypo event.Since then my canadian bg numbers seem to hover in the low to mid 5 range like 5.3,5.6 and so on.That is good but he is not losing weight and has a slightly elevated levels of protein in his urine. Is it the dry hills food that is the problem or something else like the amount I feed him which is aquarter cup twice a day-any ideas?

Also-if I can get him on wet food which is a decent canadian grocery store food, pate and non-pate? Do I keep him on the same amount comparable for a dry to wet conversion?

It's most likely the dry because dry food is not compositionally "complete" for a cat's nutritional needs so they often overeat trying to compensate for the higher carbs and lower fat/protein. It also puts a strain on the kidneys due to water depletion and that might be why you're seeing the elevated protein levels.

In Canada, you should have most of the foods available off of Dr. Lisa's food chart. Look for anything less than 8-10% carbs, the lower the better. No gravies, but most of the pâtés are fine. She also has a page on tips for transitioning to wet food that you might find helpful.

As to the amount to feed, the catinfo.org site also has a page on feline obesity with information on how much to feed and how to help the cat lose weight in a healthy manner (not too fast!).
