Dante was diagnosed in sept 2013 and put on lantis 2x a day and on hills prescription diet m/d dry food as he will rarely eat wet food.As of a month ago he was taken off insulin when he had a hypo event.Since then my canadian bg numbers seem to hover in the low to mid 5 range like 5.3,5.6 and so on.That is good but he is not losing weight and has a slightly elevated levels of protein in his urine. Is it the dry hills food that is the problem or something else like the amount I feed him which is aquarter cup twice a day-any ideas?

Protein in the urine suggests the beginnings of renal disease. You may want to work really hard on switching him to canned, low carb, AND low phosphorus.

And take a look at this site - Feline CRF - to read more about renal impairment.

I have heard of some grocery store brands that work well.I found that fancy feast has two wheat gluten and grain free products in canada, just the regular chicken feast pate and beef feast pate.Min.protein 11% and 78% moisture max.Are those good numbers for wet food? Also,he only has a trace of protein on the test strip and no blood and no ketones.Going to take urine sample to vet for testing.

Cat Info has a terrific food list posted on the 1st page, in the black column on the right. You can check for most North American foods in that PDF. Any with under 10% calories from carbohydrates is suitable. You may want to select ones with low phosphorus, too, to reduce the workload on the kidneys.

He is transitioning well off of dry food..How much wet food should I give him? He was put on a quarter cup twice a day.A quarter cup equals 57 grams. The can stuff I am feeding him has 85 grams per can.I have to keep him on twice a day feedings aswell.

Check the calorie count, not the weight. Wet food is less calorie dense due to the water (arond 78% water), so you feed more, roughly 3 times more, depending on calorie density.
