Currier in a Maryland Shelter

Currier's Blog page with more information.

Currier is an insulin-dependent diabetic that was surrendered December 14 to the Montgomery County (MD) Humane Society. His "give up sheet says he was 6 years and 3 days old on the day his people gave him up, saying that they did not have time for him. Pretty lousy birthday present, eh?

Currier is having a problem with inappropriate urination. He is on 7 units twice a day of ProZinc. The shelter is giving him insulin. He is not being hometested. In my opinion, Currier is being overdosed with the insulin and is at risk of hypoglycemia. He is young and should be able to go into remission if he is soon properly managed with an appropriate insulin, hometesting, and low-carb wet food. Inappropriate urination is a symptom of mismanaged diabetes.

I could not get a really clear answer about Currier's risk for euthanasia and what the timeline for that would be.

I have a vague memory that DCIN has been involved in the past with a diabetic from this shelter, but I can't recall what cat. Might anyone remember?

"Lori, thank you for saying that. Yes, I am amazed at all the work and coordination.

Here is a funny little thing:

When I agreed to foster the current diabetic foster (now FDMB-renamed Sebastian Purrbox, giving me headaches beign inconsistent on lantus, sigh, but he is ADORABLE!), and I went to visit him at the local county shelter the day before I was to pick him up and take him home, the shelter lady who let me back to see him asked me:

"Have you heard about the Diabetic Cat rescue in Delaware?" and "What do you know about them?"

I had to tell her of course that DCIN doesn't have a shelter, they only work through fosters. But people are finding it on their own.

(She had a diabetic cat herself, actually, her name is Bobbi -- so Venita, if you get an email from a "Bobbi" at the Montgomery County Humane Society shelter, you will know it's her).

Found this post, referencing Sebastian Purrbox being from there

You are right, Lisa, it was Bastian.

So Stef has experience with this shelter. She says: "MCHS is a kill shelter, so I don't know how much time he may have. Although they don't really like being a kill shelter, so they usually will work with you."

Prince George's is the Auschwitz of animal control shelters in Maryland, dearest Venita,

Fancy Cats in VA rescued Nikki from PG's euthanasia list because she was diabetic. I apologize for not remembering the name of that darling furry boy Beltway traffic caused Fancy Cats to be 45 minutes late; and, PG put him down knowing people were coming to rescue him...

Much love and countless grateful hugs for all those who rescue precious furries -- and who rescued Nikki,
Deb and Nikki -- and Giz, forever whispering in my heart, who just whispered Lionel...

I got more info about Currier from the MCHS yesterday and have posted it on his blog page here.

Currier might be an easily-broken diabetic. I fear for him being on 6.5U BID and not being tested. And now his diet is being changed to low-carb. Well meaning, but could be a disaster without a dosage decrease. The staff told me the vet would see Currier in a couple weeks after the diet change to determine whether he needs a dose decrease. ohmygod_smile
