Currently giving insulin - how to "start over"?

Lucy is currently on 4 units of ProZinc (using a U40 1mL 28G x 1/2" syringe) twice a day and has been for several weeks. Prior to that, she was on 3 units 2x a day, 2 units 2x a day, and 1 unit 2x a day, each for several weeks. Increased per direction from the vet. Her glucose readings have been all over the place, mostly high 300+, using the Alpha Trak 2 meter. I am worried I have not been doing this whole process correctly as I've been listening to what the vet has been telling me. I'd like to "start over" for lack of a better description. I am worried that I have either missed her ideal dose or she is becoming insulin resistant. Is this wise, and if so, how is it done? I've seen the Go Slow method mentioned several times but since she is already on insulin, I'm not sure how to follow this. Do I decrease her insulin dose and begin testing twice a day prior to food and dosing while tracking her numbers in the spreadsheet? I am going to buy a Relion Micro from Wal-Mart today based on reading the reviews of it here as the AT2 strips' prices are nuts.

More information on Lucy and primary goals are in Introduction post.

Thank you in advance! Can't wait to make Miss Lucy feel better.

Welcome, Miss Lucy's human!

The Alpha Trak 2 is a good meter but most of us use a human meter due to the cost of test strips. ReliOn Confirm or Micro from Walmart is the most common one for us in the states. Do you have a record of her BG readings? I'm still new but I think her ideal dose may have been skipped since the Vet increased dosage by a whole unit. If you can get your SS up with data you have, it will help with deciding :). I just realized I'm responding to what you said on your introduction, lol!

Definitely try to get the data on the SpreadSheet we use here, instructions link: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/

Little bit of info in your Signature helps with a quick glance for those of us with bad memories: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/

For more dosing questions, come post on the ProZinc thread. We are a smaller group but still get lots of help from each other and members on the entire forum :cat:. I think we also have 3 very new PZ members :)

Thank you for the welcome :)! I've downloaded the spreadsheet and published to my Google Drive to begin tracking once I pick up the ReliOn Micro today. I have recorded her BG readings along with current doses and feeding habits but did not keep them once I had sent them all in to the vet which is a mistake I've definitely learned from at this point. The advice I received from the vet on how to manage this condition and how to do these curves also does not seem to be very good or accurate after reading through some of the posts on this forum so I'm nervous to even use those readings. Once I begin recording, I'll also post the link to the spreadsheet in my signature. Should I just begin recording twice a day, right before feeding and insulin dosage?

Would you recommend I post or essentially "move" this conversation in to the ProZinc forum to determine what the next move should be as far as keeping, stopping, or reducing the insulin dosage starting tomorrow morning?

Thanks again!

Yes, you'll get more insulin specific advice on the ProZinc forum.
