crystals in urine

My friend has a young kitty that just went to the vets and was diagnosed with having crystals in her urine. She's been squatting in her box, yelping, not peeing much, etc. The vet drew urine, saw the crystals, put her on antibiotics and then also prescribed a dry cat food, called crystal diet. The bag is small, nearly 20.00$ and my friend was wanting to know if that was the right course to take, and if not, what can she do? Is there a cheaper food that she can be put on, to help prevent these crystals from returning?

And a big NO to dry food - it may result in chronic dehydration which increases concentration of solute making it easier for stones to form.
