Could use some advice, please

Hi, been a member for a bit just...was just trying (unsuccessfully) to control Spaz's levels on my own. Obviously I'm not doing a good job of it and would like some advice if possible.

What's making me nervous is that when I upped his dose his levels seemed to shoot up higher. I don't know what to do. Was wondering if there's a way that I can 'start over'...like go off insulin for a few days then start low and up every 0.5 until I get good numbers?

As much as I try I'm not very good at keeping much of a schedule. I feed him when he lets me know he's hungry (leaving alot in the bowl just goes to waste). I *try* to have him on a 10a/10p schedule, but it seems something seems to come up to push it off.

I don't know, I just need some advice on what I can do to do better...I guess that's what I'm trying to get at.

OK from looking at your ss, great job recording, I see that you have no mid cycle tests, and it's the lowest point in cycles that you need to know before deciding if a dose is good or bad.

What's happening in those 12 hours between 2 shots? Are all the numbers staying high, in the 300s, or are you often missing some low numbers and your cat is just bouncing high again by the next shot time? If numbers are all flat, then you would need to increase the dose, but if you are getting some low 100s in there, you may want to step down in dose.

Also, I see no testing at all in the PM cycles, and at the least, it would be important to get a before bed test because many cats go low overnight.

When are you able to do a few curves? On 12/18 and 12/31, you got some good test info, but it would be good if you can do another curve now to see how you are doing. It's a good idea not to hold a dose too long if the numbers are high..... you have been holding the 1.5u for weeks, so any resistance gets a good grip and makes it harder to get your cat regulated.

I think I'd suggest to hold a dose for 6 cycles as you want to give the dose a chance to settle, and those highs on dose changes are expected, then if you can do a curve, you can decide if the dose is good or needs to be raised.

I would stay at the dose your at, like Blue says 6 cycles with a curve. You gotta see how low Spaz goes. It might of bounced and you missed a shot. How old is the bottle? It takes a while to regulate. Here is Boot's old SS http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p-RGyNE2e_WgJLCZoz_C8WQ It took three months andI was home a lot to test and feed. It's a beautiful SS and transition. Boots over ate in her earlier year, so I even regulated her food.

You are doing great. It just takes time and patience and most important, consistency.
Hang in there. Don't stop your shots. It isn't starting over. It's inviting vet bills, ketones, God forbid or other complications.

Hi Kelly,
The best advise I could give you is to get on the Lantus Tight Regulation Board. That's where the experts are.
They will over see you and Spaz and help get you get Spaz regulated. That's how I did it. You will too. We just aren't meant
to do things alone sometimes. I think it's great how honest you are being and bringing to the table how it's
been for you.

Hello there,

You have made a great start and done a lot of good things but I agree with the others, you need to get more mid cycle checks like between +4 and +7 to see if you can catch the nadir. (Low point)

A few random spot checks at different times to fill up some of those blanks would be good too. For example you have never taken a +1.

Remembering that a bounce can last a few days it would be good to try and get more data, especially around the expected nadir times for a few days in a row at least so you can see what this new dose is really doing before you make a change. Today he might be coming down from a bounce yesterday so you may see lower levels during the day.

And I also suggest you come over to the tight regulation forum too where you will get more support.
