Cotton has been on only wet food for about 2 weeks, (FF pates/classic & a couple other flavours with high protein) 3 cans per day. His night and morning preshot BGs are just too high (generally over 500). Sometimes he does manage get a couple bites of one of the other 5 cats' leftovers before I can pick them up.
On the 12 hour curve test I did, he got a decent nadir of 165 at +5 with 3.5 units, but I understand the Lantus should get that flatter curve and escape the extremes of >500 area.
Question - will I reduce the dosage? I thought I had read that if they are already on a controlled wet diet and on insulin, that the dosage should remain the same?
Or should I drop it to 2?
Thank you for any advice.

Do you post on the Lantus forum? You may want to post the same question there. Sorry I cant give dosing advice But this post will take your thread to the top of the list ;)

Thank you!!

Read all the "Sticky" posts over in the Lantus forum before you switch.
Lots of members over there to help you too.

Since you are in Canada, you should be able to pick up lantus without a prescription at any pharmacy. For about 1/3 the cost that people in the US pay.

Dosage remains the same. Or more specifically, you take the current dose into consideration when you switch insulins. So the same dose or very close to it.

Caninsulin. Named for canines (that is dogs). Some cats can do ok on Caninsulin, but many do not get more than 8-10 hours of duration. So the BG levels spike back up quickly towards the end of the cycle.

Your SS says you switched to Lantus on 11/20/20, or plan to (since that isn't until tomorrow). At least, that is what it says in the Remarks column.

This evening I bought a bottle of lantus, along with the ultra-fine syringes that are for the 100 iu, 30 unit 3/10 ml with half-unit markings.
I was planning to switch him tomorrow if I heard a confirmation that it would be unit for unit.

I will also go and make sure I read the stikies just to ensure I didnt miss one

The insulin depot for lantus takes 3-5 days to build up. So you need to closely monitor how Cotton is doing during that time.

Posting style is different in the Lantus ISG. They like you to create a new post every day, and link the old post at the top. Plus, keep changing the title with the BG readings, so that people scanning the board can see any cats that need particular attention.

I am going to go back to the Lantus board to see if there is a schedule for that - should I test every 2 hours for 12 for several days?

NVM it looks like people are testing slightly less in some cases. I will look to do 4 times in 12 hours for several days, and watch him closely. I also am thinking to I put him at 2.5 units per shot to see where the low points and high points are, and then look to adjust in 6-7 days when there is more info to go on - does that sound okay or should this be different?
