My cat Vredi is just being switched by a new vet from ProZinc to Lantus. I have just paid $115 for a vial at Safeway in Hilo, Hawaii. Anyone with good ideas on where to go for cheaper price? Anyone on this message board who uses U-40 insulin syringes, I have a bundle. confused_cat vredenburghi

Keep in mind the vial, refrigerated on a non-moving shelf, will last a couple of months. It contains 1,000 units, which you aren't likely to use up before its time to switch to a new one (unless its a high dose kitty, in which case, you might).

Next time, get the Lantus Solostar pens - more upfront expense, but less waste. It contains 3 ml (300 units) instead of 10 ml (1,000 units). You draw the insulin out with a regular syringe.

Sam's Club in the US was about $47/3 ml Solostar pen.

There are some Canadian pharmacies that will ship online, WITH an Rx for Lantus ... if you trust the shipping to remain cool enough not to damage it and to avoid unnecessary roughness with the packages.

In most cases you have to purchase a package of five 3ml cartridges at a time....more up-front cost.

But each cartridge should give you 2+ months of use before it 'poops out'. You throw away a lot
less than with the 10ml vial.

SOME (but not all) pharmacies will sell individual cartridges.

You should call around and get prices and availablity, then have your vet write a new RX
for the solostar pens (aka cartridges) before your next purchase.
