Question: I know that every vet's price is different, however, is the cost of bupe affordable, and how effective is it? Is there any long term side affects?

WCR: All is well with Blackie, other than her mobility issue. I have an appointment for tomorrow morning at 9 for me to go see the vet about getting her something so that she can hopefully move around a bit better without much, or any pain. I'll be using the camcorder on my cell to document her movements for the vet to see. Hopefully, the lighting will be enough for the vet to make a good pain med diagnosis. I will also mention to not give her Metacam. I read an article about it that another vet had posted online about 3 years ago, and it wasn't a good med to use then. I would like to give her something without any ill affects, hopefully. As you all know, our kitties have been going through enough as it is, and the last thing we all want is to harm them any more than they are already due to the diabetes.

well it ain't cheap.

so far, I can only get it from my vet.... 30 pre-loaded syringes with 0.1 ml for $110.
Shadow gets a dose every night. I can't afford morning too.

The vet has given me a written prescription and supposedly I could get my own 3 ml vial for $65 but I can't find a pharmacy that can
order it. They think they can but when they try, they are told no.

I have purchased it directly from a compounding pharmacy locally in a vial and paid less than at the vet's office. Originally that was how I was told to get it. My VCA took over the vet's office had it but I continued to get it from the compounding at a reduced price. Before VCA my vet didn't take an extra markup like most do. I like the vial as I can custom dose. They put it in a dark bottle and say to store it in a special bag and it lasts much longer than the expiration date. It might weaken a bit though.

I don't know if it's something about NM... but I can't find any where able to get it for me. I'm hoping more of you have sources

I get it compounded from Diamondback Drugs online. It is about 68 bucks (with shipping) for 60 ml. We've been getting it there for about a year. Without it, Ozy would have a much worse quality of life. It works really well for him.

We got a small vial from out vet (.3ml) for $19, quite a bit cheaper than the pre-loaded syringes. What I really like though is that I can give Tess less, it's really hard w/ the syringes to give a partial dose. From what I've read it is the only opiate that cats do well w/ and there are few side effects. They can be tired and a bit loopy, sometimes tummy upsets, less of that is you just squirt it under the lip.

I thank you all for the information, and any and all information is gratefully appreciated. I'm anxious about this as I have a feeling that my vet may prescribe Metacam, and I know that someone on here suggested to never give it to Blackie. As you all know, and I'm sure you feel the same way about your babies, you don't ever want to harm them anymore than the diabetes has already done so. I will be discussing this with her tomorrow (it's our new vet, obviously, not the other one whom I constantly butt heads with). I'll be bringing with me her Zobaline and Glucosamine to show her what and how much she's getting, along with the camcorder video that I'll be taking with my cell phone.

metacam has a black box warning from the FDA...it can cause kidney failure in kitties so yep, you never want to use it. It's shocking vets still prescribe it. Hopefully you'll be able to get the bupe!

ALso, if it's arthritis, adequan is a great option. It worked very well for my GA civvie, Mario. When we used to get it, several years ago, we got it through DRs Foster and Smith - they had the best price.

Buprenex is my preferred pain med. It makes them HAPPY! while many make them little zombies. Many vets are going to tramadol because it is cheap and I've not liked its side effects on any of the cats, just plain scary on my oldies. The smaller the cat, the cheaper Bupe is :smile: When we put our 15 pounder on it, it ended up costing more than $100 for a 3 day course through the vets. They were out of stock however, and ended up sending the script to our compounding pharmacy where in only cost about $50 for 7 days worth of bupe for the big guy. So getting the script sent out of the vets office seems to make it more affordable.

It cost me $40 to get a 5ml vial from my vet. With a vial, I can adjust the dose if I need since I use a syringe. The dose the vet usually tells me to give has been too high and made my cats loopy. Each cat is different in the amount they need. I've read Bupe can cost stomach upset and it's best to give a probiotic with it.

I'm doing a bit of research now on the different drugs out there. I don't think I'd be able to inject something into her muscle. Sub-q is the limit with me.

If you're referring to the Adequan, the concept of having to inject it into the muscle is out-dated. It can be done as a sub-Q injection, just like insulin. We injected Mario sub-Q, and it still worked beautifully for him.

my 2 cents worth. I have used bupe for Mannie, it worked wonderfully, no side affects, short of being loopy if I gave more than he needed. I will say with a certainty that you do not want metacam. It is black boxed for cats. I know from personal experience that it can cause kidney failure. The use of metacam was the factor in loosing one of my cats a few years ago. I will never ever use it again. it is a killer.

I too had the bupe in a small vial, can't remember the price, b ut I could dose as needed that way. it worked great.
