Convenia Injectable Antibiotic Safe?

My cat just had 10 teeth extracted during a dental on Friday. The vet prescribed liquid antibiotic Clavamox for 10 days. She had already been taking it for 8 days prior to the dental, but now I'm finding it impossible to give it to her. She is completely done with anyone messing with her mouth. She gags and vomits even if I manage to get a little into her mout. I was able to give her main medicine, and she is not acting like she is in much pain anymore. I asked the vet about an alternative antibiotic and she mentioned the injectable Convenia or a Zenequin tablet that I could crush into food. I decided on the tablet because I've read some iffy stuff about the injectable. Has anyone else heard if this injectable is safe?

Yup. This is what I read that made me not want to use it. I love Pill Pockets, but didn't think she could have them because of the carbs. Maybe a couple a day for several days won't be that big of a deal? Her BG's have been pretty decent even despite the surgery.

I would go with the tablets rather than the injectable--the tablets are safer because if your cat has a reaction to the antibiotic, you can get it out of your cat's system the way you can with the daily antibiotics.

I found that even with the flavored tablets, my cats wouldn't eat them crushed in food. However, I found that pill pockets were a lifesaver. Here's a link to the diabetic-friendly ones http://www.petfooddirect.com/produc...asted-Duck-and-Pea-Allergy-Formula-Cat-Treats. They sell them at most vet offices, and at Petsmart and Petco.

Another trick is to make your own pill pockets--I had to do this when Gabby started refusing the Greenies. I used a small piece of cheese and molded it around the pill, and then rolled it in canned tuna or salmon or whatever Gabby's favorite treat was at the time.

The chicken and salmon pill pockets have corn syrup in them, but the duck & pea ones don't have any sugar or grains and are fine for diabetics.

Great tips! Thanks for the info. Trying to pill a cat makes blood sugar tests and insulin shots seem like a piece of cake! :-D

Oh boy, is that true!

In the final stages of Gabby's cancer, she was refusing all three flavors of pill pockets--so then I was using a small piece of cheese rolled in tuna, and she refused that after a while. Then it was cheese and sardines, raw beef, chicken breast, crabmeat, canned salmon, and spam, all of which she eventually refused. I had a pill gun, but pilling Gabby against her will just broke my heart--she would get upset and stressed out, which I didn't want on top of the cancer. The final thing that worked after everything else had been refused was this--I used a small piece of pill pocket (just enough to cover the pill), and then I smooshed up one of the moist Pounce or Whisker Lickins cat treats, and then molded that around the outside of the pill-pocket. She never once refused the pill after that--Gabby LOVED those treats.

Luckily, Bandit is a kitty garbage disposal--I don't have to doctor up his pills much to get him to take them!

You're a great mommy. I'm sorry about your Gabby. I actually cried last night trying to squirt the antibiotic in Timmy's mouth. She's bees through so much with the tooth extractions, I hate to even touch her mouth. She's a real trooper, though. Still all purrs and cuddles.

Nope. A few days of possible slightly higher than usual bgs from one Pill Pocket per day isn't going to mess anything up permanently  Once the course of antibiotics is over, bgs will go back down.

Good for you for doing your homework before allowing Convenia to be administered. Aside from all that I discussed on my website, it is NOT an appropriate drug to be giving for dental issues.

Another frustrating issue for me is that my colleagues forget that clavamox tabs are tasteless and can be crushed and put into food. So why switch to zenequin which is also not a very appropriate antibiotic for dental issues?

I have never had a cat refuse to eat clavamox tabs crushed in food so it makes no sense to switch to zenequin which, again, is not an optimal drug for the oral cavity.

Also understand that we are severely abusing/overusing antibiotics, in general. This has become a very vocal pet peeve of the board certified dentists.....the rampant OVERuse of antibiotics in dentistry. On VIN they discuss only using ABs (even with major extractions) if there is radiographic evidence of a bone infection which is not very common.

Clarification of the poorly worded sentence above.

The boarded dentists do many major extractions and do NOT use antibiotics. They only use them if there is radiographic evidence of bone infection.

My cat was on Clavamox liquid for 8 days prior to the dental, and will now be on Zenequin for the next 10 days or so. I asked the vet if this was just preventative antibiotics, and she said it was for the infection that she saw in my cats mouth. The 10 teeth removed were pretty rotten. Do you still think the extra antibiotics are overdoing it?

What did the x-rays show? It is impossible (and unethical) to comment past general statements but I still disagree with changing ABs when clavamox is more appropriate for oral bacteria and she was doing well on it and the bugs were already exposed to it.
