Convenia & Diabetic Cats

Hello everyone, I'm Diane and I'm new as of tonight. I read a quick post that was dated several years ago about
Convenia being detrimental to a diabetic cat's health. Is there a way I can find that (and more information) to
share with my veterinarian?
Thank you in advance

Hello and welcome.

There is nothing special about a cat being diabetic that is contraindicated for Convenia. Convenia can also cause problems with non diabetic cats. If your cat has had Convenia before, he's probably OK to have it again. There are some cats who have adverse reactions to the drug, and since it's long lasting drug, the reaction can last a long time. This is a page by a feline nutritionist vet who talks about it.

I was just going through Norm's paperwork and see that he was given a dose of Convenia while he was in and got his diabetes dx. Given that I don't think he's ever had it before, I wonder if that's what caused the intense diarrhea immediately after that visit to the vet (and still ongoing...)

Let me tag a member that has amazing medical information on medications and illnesses, I hope he gets better soon

Here's the prescribing info for Convenia: https://www.zoetisus.com/content/_a...-inserts/convenia-prescribing-information.pdf

Diarrhea is noted as an adverse reaction in 7 out of 144 cats given Convenia on a field study of 291 cats total.

Also of note, in the Precautions section it states that "Convenia is slowly eliminated from the body, approximately 65 days is needed to eliminate 97% of the administered dose from the body. Animals experiencing an adverse reaction may need to be monitored for this duration."

The reason we suggest something other than Convenia is that it's only indication is for skin infections and because it is so long acting. If there's an adverse/allergic reaction, you're dealing with it for an extraordinarily long time. I won't use it and one of my vets won't use it.
