So I took Rocco to the vet today and his BG levels are low. So the vet is having me take him from 1 unit to 1/2 a unit 2x a day. Its too early to tell, but it looks like I will be able to control his diabetes through diet alone, which is awesome. :-D She said that it can take a week for his body to adjust and for me to do a curve on him next Monday (which I will do) and call her on Tuesday with the results and go from there. She showed me how to test on his paws since he hates having his ears touched. His veins are really bad and they had a hard time getting blood from him and recommended the paw too.
He was just diagnosed a month ago, is it too early for him to go off insulin? I have read that alot of cats can have their diabetes controlled through diet alone after being on insulin; I just wasn't thinking it would be so soon. Has anyone ever had this happen so soon after being diagnosed? I will do whatever the vet tells me to do. I fed him at 7am and gave him his insulin after he ate and his BG level at 2:30pm was 72. When I tested him last Monday, his BG level was 174 an hour before I fed him.

Good for you for home testing. Yes, it is quite possible that after a little help his pancreas will feel better and produce enough insulin on its own. However, you still need to be diligent about his diet - as you said, he will be a diet-controlled diabetic. Some cats seems quite hardy as diet controlled and others need insulin again if there is a lot of stress (visitors, moving, illness) or need for a dental or other infection. I just wanted to emphasize that you are on exactly the right track by testing and thinking of him as diet controlled (assuming that he is able to go the last little bit and not need insulin in a few weeks). Here's hoping.

Maxwell was OTJ after a mere 2 weeks on insulin and will be celebrating 1 year OTJ on this coming November 1st.

Bob was on insulin for about 10 weeks and went OTJ in July. Now he's diet-controlled. It means that I never have to buy dry food again! My civvie Mullet misses the dry, but he's better off too now, even if he doesn't think so. If/when Rocco is diet controlled, you will just have to keep in mind that the important part of that is "control".
Here's hoping you get there soon!

Cheekyface was only on insulin for 9 weeks and has been OTJ for over a month now, just on diet control. As soon as the vet said to stop the insulin I dumped the m/d, changed her onto FF lowcarb and she's losing her still-excess weight at a nice safe rate :-D hopefully it won't be too long for you!

Good for Rocco and Nicole!!!

You could be preparing for an OTJ party soon.

My sugar Bean was only on insulin for about 1 month. I found this site, changed to low carb food, destressed as much as I could!

Good news for Rocco!

Its good to hear that it is possible for him to be off insulin. I will be sure to let you all know how the curve goes on Monday. THANK YOU!!
