Tricia Cinco(GA) & Harvey

Member Since 2011
Cinco had been in remission for over a year, then recently began urinating a lot and his BG went way up. Here's some info from my last post:

Cinco's numbers hadn't gone down by Tuesday, so I took him to the vet. He ran a complete blood panel and found no issues, but BG was at 399. He said he wanted me to bring him back next morning so they could give him a unit of insulin and do a curve. He was there from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and they only gave him the one shot in the am. His BG dipped down to 61 at +6 and was up to 192 at +11. The vet wrote a script for Lantus, but told me to wait a week before filling it. He wants to give Cinco one more week to see if the correct diet can get his BG moving down. He said if at the end of the week it was still averaging over 300, I should fill the script and start at one half unit, twice a day. So far he's staying right around 300. His urine output is almost to normal, though, which I think is a good sign.
After the week had passed, Cinco was still in the 300s, so I filled the script and followed the vet's instructions to start him at .5 units, twice a day (starting 11/1). Since then, most of his readings have been in the 200s, with a couple of 100s and a couple of 300s. It doesn't seem like we're getting anywhere. His urine output is still above normal, although still better than when I first found he had relapsed. My question is, should I bump him up to 1 unit twice a day now or wait longer? We are going out of town for 5 days, starting Wednesday night, and he will be boarded at the vet. They have 24 hour care, but I'm not sure they would watch him as closely as I would, so I am considering waiting to bump him up until we get home. Advice, please?

Make sure the Vet tests for keytones. I cant give dosing advice but this post will bump up your thread for more eyes to read.
Wishing you good luck,
jeanne

Also are you sure Cinco doesnt have am infection?

The vet did not take a urine sample, so I don't think he tested for keytones. He did a thorough blood panel, though, so I'm sure an infection would have shown up.

1- What food will they be feeding him? 2- Are you providing it and will they use it?

As his readings are in the 200's I would say it is safe to keep him there for the duration of the stay. Most of us drop the dose while we are away and someone else is watching our pets because we know what to watch for and they don't. Mid 200's is below renal threshhold and he seems in the middle so that would be safe to keep him there while you are gone.

Looking at his food- you took away the dry- no more dry (not even a little) for a FD EVER again- as you found out. It's so easy to just give that but that does have consequences on someone in remission. The sliced deli food will raise the numbers- mainly b/c of the preservatives (sodium and stuff) to keep it on the shelf and in your fridge longer. I know when I give that to Sneakers it raised her BG as much as 100 points for well over a day and you give it to her for treats frequently when you test her... try boiled chicken with no salt or get some freeze-dried shrimp, beef, or lamb for the treats.

Also- the canned food you give, since he was in remission and is now out because of (maybe) dry food, I would suggest keeping his carb % content at the same percentage for a week. Choose one- say 4%- and buy all the cans he likes of 4% and feed those through the week and see if that helps any. Sneakers got into dry back in March and her numbers kept being crazy until I did this and within a week she settled down again. Now I don't have to worry about the % #'s- just as they are under 5%- as she can handle that slight of change in her carb intake now a lot better than she did.

I hope this has helped in some way. These are things I learned the hard way with and Cinco might not be as stubborn as mine was

Thank you, Heather. Lots of good advice and info.

I will be taking his food to the vet, and yes, they will feed him as I instruct them to.

I had tried finding low carb treats for him but could never find any of the ones listed on this site, so thought turkey straight from the deli would be okay. I'll have another look around today when I am out and see if I can find something else from the list. I also see, from the canned food list, that most of the FF flavors I've been feeding are at 4 or lower, so I'll pick a couple of those for him to stick to and see how that does. He is not at all picky about food, so I don't worry he won't like something - I think that comes from being a starving stray when I found him.

I feel better about keeping him at .5 for now. Thanks again.

I found my treats at PetSmart in the same isle as the FF cans. A little 8 oz bag for about $2.50- $4 depending on if they are on sale or not.
