The longer I wait for insulin the more it sets in how life changing this is...Ive had a really tearful day but I will figure out my emails and passwords etc and get back to Bandits Mom tomorrow. Thank you so much for putting up with me. I don't know when I have ever felt so inadequate. Gratefully,
Bootsie is grooming and playing and eating and being a cat. Thank you again
 
Sweety I have cried till there were no more tears, felt inadequate like I was always doing something wrong, blasting this forum till my fingertips hurt, ran around the house like a chicken without a head, many, many sleepless night, post and post this forum till my fingertips hurt,, we all have felt the same, but it gets better, Suzane told me the magic words: " breath in breath out, cats are very sensitive to stress you stress they stress" and those magic words reminded me how much Corky needed me, and I was going to make it work. in about 3 weeks or so I became more relaxed it does ges better; and I was going to make it work. in about 2-3 weeks I became very relaxed,
don't beat yourself up, have a good nights rest, tomorrow is another day 🤗 :cat::cat:
 
I've been here a long time. Gabby was diagnosed in 2009. I can't think of a single person who wasn't overwhelmed when they first found out their cat had diabetes. That list of members includes MDs, vets, vet techs, and members who were diabetics themselves.

Feeling overwhelmed is absolutely normal for where you are in this process. What I can also guarantee is that it will get easier and you will become more confident. We are not a group of "crazy cat ladies (and men)" who are going to tell you only what you want to hear. We're here to support you. Our members, in general, do their homework and read journal articles in addition to sharing their personal experience. It just takes a bit of time for you to get all of the information sorted out in your head and get your routine established. The members here are incredibly generous with their time and knowledge. The bottom line is that we're here to help.

Thank you for the kind words. I so wish the next 3 week did not include Christmas with children and grands in the house-its usually just the kitties and me. 3 weeks -- I can do 3weeks. Thank you for all your support. I have used a carb calculator and labeled all my cat food because I feed a variety. ..bought based on phosphorus for puff. Most of it seems ok. 0-3.5 carb. Lucky that grain free fits both needs. I bought Nutrinib treats beef and put it in the calculator and they came out like 30% carb even though only ingredient is beef... . dried beef. Could that be right? Is there a different way to figure dried foods? I so want to do this right. Today I am going to work on my hypo kit.

now the Holidays are here it will be a stressful one for all, but it will be a good time for you to enjoy and pick up where you left off, you are doing awesome, you will be great and Bootsie will understand you are doing all this because you love him, Before Corky was diagnosed, he was not a cuddly or couch cat, and now he's all over me and does not leave my sight. Bandit's Mom send me a message again in regards to your Spreadsheet, perhaps before your house gets busy, you might want to read her message, so we can have that SS ready for you so we all can relax, we are very numbers oriented and if you come across
any circumstances with Bootsie about dosing, it will be very hard to assist you or guide you unless we see some consistent BG numbers. Enjoy your weekend,
also, it's great you are using a carb calculator, below is a cat carb calculator link for you, you use the nutrients written on the label, place them in the cells of the calculator, now the carb % you would be looking for are the DRY Carb Matter, not the Wet carb matter, Be proud you have come a long way already 🤗 🐱 we will be here for you all steps of the way 24/7, you are not alone

New to this and I hate to be a dummy-- but --are Nutrinibs which are dried beef and liver , no other ingredients listed really 30 % carb. im trying to stay as low as I can especially until I get insulin? I have put the info into 2 carb calculators and both say 30% but it is all meat. ...is that right?
 
that’s a lot of carbs, Fancy Feast has Tender Beef pate is 4%, also Chicken & Giblets 2% , I’m sending you a Drs food list the third column contains the % of carbs for each food, there are many brands and flavors to choose from please stay on 0-10% carbs the most important in a diabetic cat is the diet, with that and the correct insulin dose you can regulate diabetes, Insert the nutrient in the cell of the calculator, we are looking for the Dry Matter carbs, feel free to ask ask and ask, no concern or questions are dumb! that's what we are here for you, Have confidence in yourself, you are doing great, and meat as long as it's pate, no gravies, they do contain a lot of carbs, look over the list, ;) :bighug: below my post you will see Corky's spreadsheet in blue, click on it, scroll to the left under remarks you can see what I feed Corky daily and when to get an idea

Good morning- insulin not here yet, but monitor has arrived and I have calibrated etc. Vet not trained me since insulin not here , but I want to spot check Bootsie's glucose to see if I am getting anywhere with low carb food. I am watching YouTube videos on how to do this. I see some that look like they are sticking the "hairy side" (outside) of the ear and others that look like they are sticking the pink (inner side) of the ear. Which is correct? .... All the cats look so calm and that is not going to be the case for me.
 
You pinch from the outside of the ear picture below will show you the sweet spot, also find a small sock fill it with rice to make a small ball tine as big as to cup the ear, so it’s easy to hold it and for it not to go thru, the lancet will go in the ear a bit sideways not straight thru, if you look at the lancet closely you will see a small curve at the end, hold his head gently but firm between the ears, so when you prick the ear he does not move the head, otherwise the tip of the ear might tear, below are several diagrams , that is Corky’s ear, take a small flashlight and study this frien a bit so you get used to knowing where it is blindly, I hoe this works

You prick from the outside of the ear, the skin is a bit tougher than the inside, Not all cats are so calm, but you can began to show him the supplies let him smell them, give a little snack, low carb, associate the testing, the supplies, with a small treat, after you test you give him the snack, he will be glad to assist

Either side of the ear works. Most people use the furry side since it's easily accessible but others prefer to use the inside. Whatever works to get blood :)

Ive tried 3 times--well three 15 minute periods . He definitely wants the treats but also wants down as soon as I try to hold him still. no luck yet...

He's a rebel! try showing him the treat where you test, try testing, then give him the treat immediately, eventually he'll get it
 
Have patience 🤗 Many newbies find hometesting the hardest part of this journey. Just keep trying. Try sitting the cat in front of you but facing away. Use your non dominate hand to wrap around the chest to hold the cat in place. Offer a treat with that hand. With your other hand, warm up the ear. The use your other hand to hold the ear warmer (rice sock or whatever you're using) in place while you poke with the lancet device, get the test strip pushed into the meter, and the blood drop onto the test strip.

You can also look into using a CGM. Getting Started With Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) for Diabetic Cats
 
How is everything going? I haven’t seen any posts from you on the ProZinc forum. I came upon one of your original posts when I was cleaning up email so I thought I would check up on you.
 
I talked to my vet today and she still does not have the insulin. Initially she and I had some disagreement on home testing. $500 on labs but no ketones done and when I ask about it -she was out of steps. I get the impression she doesn't do a lot of feline diabetes--- and so I ask for a referral an internist at the Vet Specialist clinic which she agreed. Hopefully will start making some progress soon. Thanks to this group Boots is at least on a better diet. Boots doesn't act sick and I am hopeful remission is still possible but online it looks like earlier treatment the better the chance and getting him treated has not gone quickly.

Good girl! You’re in control, honestly, I think she saw a piggy bank in you and not your babie’s interest or recovery, even a person that does not have a diabetic cat, as a certified Dr knows that even a human needs home testing to check glucose levels, and we are all cat cat crazy in this forum, is a label I love to wear, and just being feline diabetes, you do not need a costly specialist, after all you have learned here and more, because after 4 years, I still learn every day, all you need is a regular vet, just in case, what you need to make sure is that the vet is well updated and knowledgeable on Feline diabetes, and is of course!! You are important to us
 
Please let us help you fill in the SS with the data needed so we can assist you with dosing when necessary, this way we can all be on the same page, you got this! Beginning with the right diet, we are here for you 24/7 I trust this Forum and the dedicated members blindly, they saved my Corky’s life! ❤️🙏🌹
 
Wow. Your cat was diagnosed on December 9 and you have not started insulin yet? The vet is really messing up. He/she could have written you a prescription and you could have gotten it in a few days time yourself and we could have helped you here because we have a lot of experience.

I’m glad you changed his diet. That is very beneficial. I’m sorry you have been having so much trouble.
