So Victor was/is constipated this morning, though he did finally go and I was wondering if it could be the Pure Bites treats we started giving him yesterday, since that's the only thing that's new. Has anyone else experienced their cat getting constipated from them?

Also, we have been giving him Laxatone for years for constipation and was wondering if any of you know when the best time would be to give it to him? Like before he eats or after he eats, etc. We always used to give it to him before his dinner but after we had to start testing before he eats, we started giving it to him in the around mid-day or early evening.

I would appreciate any ideas/advice/suggestions about both of these things.

Laxatone has sugar-like ingredients I think so it could affect Victor's BG. Check the label on the tube. What can help a lot with constipation is a wet food diet where you add water to every wet food meal (a tablespoon or two). Dry food contributes to dehydration which can cause constipation.

I haven't dealt with the issue directly but many people here do. Here are some of the remedies that are popular:
  • plain canned pumpkin (not the spiced pie mix) added to every meal. You can start with a tiny fraction of a teaspoon and increase until he's pooping normally. The can contents can be frozen in small daily amounts in an ice cube tray and taken out as needed. My mom used to do this for her old guy and it worked well.
  • Miralax (Restorolax), the human stool softener, added to food as needed. You could post for info about dose.
This should be a starting point for you. You can post again with the blue question mark icon on your thread title to get attention. Ask specifically for dosing recommendations.

I just checked. Here are the ingredients in Laxatone:

Ingredients in Laxatone
Active Ingredients:
White Petrolatum USP, Soybean Oil (providing Omega 3, 6 & 9 Fatty Acids), Light Mineral Oil

Inactive Ingredients:
Cane Molasses, Corn Syrup, Gelatin By-Products, Malt Syrup, Maple Flavor, Sodium Benzoate, Water.

Three of the inactive flavouring ingredients are sugars.

Okay, thanks for the advice. If he continues to have issues we'll try out those suggestions.

So Victor seemed to be constipated again tonight, and I really can't help but suspect it's the Pure Bites treats causing it somehow. The first bout with constipation that I initially made this thread about came on the day after we had started giving him the Pure Bites treats, so the following day we held off on giving him any and he seemed to do better. Then we went ahead and continued giving them to him yesterday, and by his PM test/meal/shot he seemed to be having issues again. I did randomly come across a thread on here from 2014 where someone said the chicken Pure Bites caused constipation in their cat, and chicken is one of the flavors we got.

So should we just stop giving him the Pure Bites altogether and try to find something different?

You could. But it's probably coincidence. Can you put a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin in his food? That always works for my kitty. And add extra water to the food too.

You could try removing the Pure Bites for a while. Treats make the whole injection/BG testing routine a positive one. You could try baking a plain chicken breast and cutting it into tiny pieces to use as treats instead. Freeze most of them and take out a day's supply at a time.

Broken record time: wet food with extra water added can help constipation a lot. ;)
