Hi everyone,

I am considering introducing some raw food to Marvin as I have heard of some cats going into remission with the help of this diet change. My local pet store carries this brand: http://www.petvalu.com/locations_servic ... s/raw-food

If you have any experience with raw food for diabetic cats (particularly with this brand) or tips on introducing raw food, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks,
Carolyn

Hi,
I have a bag of that.
I have been thawing out a couple of patties from it every other day. I usually present it to my cat and she will eat at least half of
it as long as I put additives on it. (she's always preferred her canned food)

ADDITIVES:

Bonita Flakes ( bonita is a japanese fish and this is a human product that they like to put on their food as a flavor enhancer,
works great on cats) You just crumble it on the raw food)
You can buy it at some pet stores. ( have also seen it called kitty kaviar)
But I just found a bag at Whole foods in the Thai section that is much cheaper than any packaged for a cat.
I think amazon is cheaper too , get the people version.

the other thing you can use is parmesan cheese. the fresher the better because it has a stronger smell.

and also Fortiflora ( a product for cats - Ihaven't tried it yet but I'm ordering it. I hear cats love it and it is a probiotic which
will be good for your cat. Apparently it really tastes good to them.

I have not succeeded with getting my cat to eat it daily but she will finish it if I keep reminding her,
" look, food in your bowl. "
I'm happy she's eating it part time.

This is decent food. If you go to the company's website, they may have coupons available even for Canada. Sign up for their newsletter and they will send you coupons.

When I've used this, I also added water to the medallions, to help mush it up more like canned food.

Nature's Variety is a good brand to try  Here's the web site: http://www.instinctpetfood.com/instinct-raw-food-dogs-and-cats

I suggest trying the new kibble-shaped Raw Bites instead of the medallions. You can start with feeding one or two kibble-shaped pieces rather than a whole 1 oz medallion whch may go to waste if yoru cat won't eat it all. Ask the pet store if they carry this or order it for you.

If your cat won't eat the raw as-is, try smushing it into some canned food. Add crushed up treats, cheese, plain cooked chicken, FortiFlora, etc on top if needed.

What I did with my rescue civie was give her some freeze dried raw food as treats. She liked those. Then I coated small pieces of the NV raw with crushed up freeze dried raw and hid the pieces in her canned food. Sometimes I used gravy canned food but obviously you can't do this for a diabetic. Civie picked around the hidden raw food at first but was soon eating it.

A diet change can help a diabetic cat. Feeding low carb canned food or raw food doesn't make a difference, IMO. Neither is guaranteed to help a cat go into remission. There are many other factors that determine if a cat can go into remission, such as how badly burnt out the pancrease is when insulin is started, if the cat is overweight, etc. The main goal is to have a happy healthy diabetic, even if insulin and diet is needed for the rest of the cat's life to keep bgs in an ideal range. I think sometimes people get too caught up in the bg numbers that they forget about the whole cat.

Well, I don't have much experience in this but I'm using fortiflora and it is fine.. so I recommend it to you...
