I have been feeding my cat, testing BG and then giving shot as needed. After reading some more it looks like I should not be feeding him before I test him? And how long should he of gone without feeding before I test?

How much time has passed between you feeding and the test?

The normal sequence is test, then let him eat and you can shoot right after or even while he's eating.
It is a good idea that you don't feed in the two hour time frame before the AMPS and PMPS tests so that the BG increase caused by eating doesn't make you think the BG is higher than a "fasting" number.

Right now I wake up feed him and then test him. Pretty much free feed throughtout the day and then 12 hours later retest him. He is eating only low carb wet food.

You can feed him first. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a test on a hungry cat. You just don't want a long period of time between the testing and the feeding. I used to let Boo eat and then checked him 10-15 minutes later.

The only truly important step is making sure you've got a glucose value before giving an insulin shot.

OK, so it sounds like only minutes are going by before you are getting the test. Like Deanie said, as long as it isn't too long, the food wouldn't have raised his numbers much if any. By 30 minutes, some of the number will "include food".

Is there any way you can remove the food a couple hours before the PM test? Free feeding during the day is fine, but if you can manage to not let him eat for a couple hours before the PM test, your numbers will make more sense. It removes the "how much of this is food related" variable from the picture.

One idea is an automatic feeder. You can set it during the day and night to feed small amounts. (Wet food can be frozen if you are worried about leaving it out too long.) Then 2 hours before test time, have it rotate to an empty section so you know he won't have access to food. I love my PetSafe5. It has 5 slots, is easy to program. Available cheapest through Amazon, I think.

Ok, now I get it. I am retired so pretty much home all day so I can definately not feed him 2 hours prior at nighttime. Thanks to all for making sense of this.
I loved Boo's video.

Thanks again.
