Confused about food choices in Canada

Hi everyone,

My second post in two days! I have to go shopping today for cat food again, and I'm completely confused. The spreadsheets on this board aren't quite matching what I'm seeing at my local Wal-Mart. I can find some of the brands listed, but all of them contain corn and/or rice, so I'm assuming the formulas are different and therefore not safe to feed.

Can anyone weigh in with a few good choices for Canada? My board searches aren't turning up much! I can try Wellness if I can get to my local pet store later today, but ideally I'd like to get everything in one place as I need to go back to Wal-Mart anyway to return the Whiskas (which my other cats HATED anyway!).

Most of them are very close. If you were looking at Friskies, it does have rice in it. I don't feed it to my diabetic Scooter but my civvie Charli gets it sometimes.

Here are a few of my favorites... I rotate the food depending on what's on sale :)

1. Fancy Feast classics - they are just called "pate" in Canada - when I can get them cheap (they are normally .63! ow)
2. Whiskas recloseable trays - I found these on sale at Walmart for .50 and stocked up!
3. President's Choice FF equivalent - snagged a bunch of this for .37 a can at Superstore!
4. Wellness chicken and turkey - Petsmart sells it for 2.40 per big can sometimes. some stores give a small discount if you buy a whole case
5. Special Kitty Select - Walmart's FF equivalent, but this keeps going up in price (now .53 a can from .41 - still OK)

Thanks for the update! I was confused when I couldn't find the "classics" in FF, but now I know to keep an eye out for the pate.

I'll have a bit more freedom of choice once the financial crunch is over from the emergency bills, but for now I'll stick with the Friskies, which tested as low carb on the list, along with a few cans of the vet prescribed for the initial transition.

The superstore mention is interesting! I'll have to check them out!

Hi and welcome to the best place you never wanted to be!

Our usual entrees consist of Grreat Choice from Petsmart. If you look on Binky's list, they would be under Sophisticat (they recently relabeled the product). The names are all the same as on the list, with the addition to Poultry Platter. Plus, the PC brand of Friskies - Chicken dinner, Turkey & Giblets and Beef dinner (although this one he didn't like). We also use Friskies Chef's dinner, even though it has brewer's rice, it never raised Kit's BG levels and he goes absolutely mad for it.

The only issue I ever had with food was when we tried Special Kitty and I used Binky's US list - came home with Chicken dinner and noticed Kitten's numbers shot straight up. I couldn't figure out why until I looked at the non-US list and noticed that Chicken dinner was 16% as opposed to the 4 or 5% (can't remember exactly) that it was in the US. So just a head's up with that particular one. The Turkey & Giblets worked just fine, but he only ate it for a day and I had to return the rest.

Not that it's a bad thing, but, Lil's suggestions are mostly the lower quality but cheaper food. Scooter wasn't a huge fan of byproduct/liver heavy foods and would turn his nose up at Friskies, Sophistacat, Special Kitty, etc.

I would avoid the big cans of Special Kitty. They have changed the ingredients recently. Here is a can of the Turkey and Giblets at my local Walmart...
