I have a 2 year old cat who suffers from auto-immune disease. He has had two episodes of meningoencephalitis (5 days in critical care unit at the university veterinary medical center), he also has had pancreatitis, hepatitis, and suffers from intermittent inflammatory bowel disease. He was originally treated with steroids and developed steroid induced diabetes. He was started on Lantus insulin and the diabetes resolved after four weeks. Thesteroid was discontinued and he was started on a chemotherapeutic agent to suppress his immune system, but unfortunately developed hepatitis and liver infection. Fortunately, he has recovered from that but his diabetes has returned after he was started on steroid ear drops. He appears to be avery happy, active cat and loves to always be with the family. We have recently switched Glucometers to the onetouch Vero. Just trying to find information on managing his sugar better.

Please let us know:
  • how long ago his diabetes returned
  • what dose of Lantus you're giving
  • what your home testing routine is
  • what meds he gets
  • what food he eats.

Hello again!
You can put a lot of that information in your Signature too :). One of the best tools is home testing, which it sounds like you are doing! If you're interested, you could also setup a Spreadsheet to track and share his BG numbers like Kris and I have, as well as many other members.

How did you manage his sugar the first time around?
Very sweet of you not to give up on this kitty :bighug:

Hi,

Meet Jones - he is here due to steroidal use as well. Are the drops a permanent thing? I can understand other health concerns complicating things. Many here have CK's (complicated kitties) and the members of this board hasn't given up on any of them.:D Jones' FD is very well controlled and has been for awhile now thanks to the folks here even though his prednisolone dose has gone down and now back up again. It is doable!

Good luck to you and welcome.
